WINTER 2019

WE’RE GRATEFUL TO SERVE Sharing Our Appreciation for Dentistry From The Heart

Hi there — how were your holidays? We had a very nice Thanksgiving at my parents’ home in Utah. The whole family was there, including my brother and his family, and we had a wonderful dinner. It was practically impossible not to eat too much of that delicious food! We ran a turkey trot that morning in hopes of burning a few calories before indulging, but I doubt it was enough to cover everything we ate. My daughter, Josie, and her husband came to the trot, along with my granddaughter in her stroller. She’s doing so great, and the highlight of my trip was spending time with this little one. She’s starting to roll over and get more dexterity in her hands, to the point where she can hold things. It’s fun to watch her try new movements — the little steps and attempts to test what her tiny body can do. Mom and Dad are wonderful parents. They’re doing super well and are loving their new roles. In early November, we hosted our annual free day of dental care, Dentistry From The Heart. They say it takes a village, and that truly applies to this volunteer event. Serving our community with free dental care would not be possible without help. We had a lot of assistance from other dental staff in the area, and I want to give a huge thanks to them for donating their time. As always, I’m very grateful for our team at Ustick Dental for getting behind this event and for their consistent willingness to lend a hand. They made this possible. Thanks also to all of you who helped spread the word about Dentistry From The Heart. Each of you contributed to the success of the day. On the day of the Dentistry From The Heart event, we saw people from all over the Treasure Valley, and even beyond. Folks see the information we put out and come from far and wide to get dental care. That makes it clear to us that there is a great need for services like these. No matter how much we accomplish, or how many people we see, there’s always more to be done. It’s a good reminder about all that we have to be grateful for and of how much we can share. There’s always a need for dental care, and it’s

why we continue to host Dentistry From The Heart each year. I’m glad we can use our resources and knowledge to provide people with access to dental care. You know, out of everything I get to do in my career, Dentistry From The Heart has to be one of the most rewarding parts of my year. It feels good to reach out to our community and alleviate the burdens of people who don’t have access to dental coverage. Many people who visit us at this event are in pain, and it feels very rewarding to relieve their suffering through dental care. It’s a busy day, but we enjoy it. Everyone goes home tired and satisfied, knowing they did their part. After a full November, December was a much quieter month. Our team got together to celebrate a successful year and reminisce on some of our achievements. For Christmas, my wife and I spent a relaxed day at home appreciating everything we have to be grateful for. I hope you were able to enjoy time with your loved ones and have a wonderful celebration as well.

Happy holidays and enjoy the new year,

-Dr. Rigby

Fun for the Whole Family! ENJOY THESE 5 WINTER ACTIVITIES

HOME-COOKED FOOD When winter rolls around, encourage your family to take part in making goodies and share them with your neighbors. Nothing warms the heart more than receiving a loaf of freshly baked banana bread during these increasingly cold days.

Throughout the season, everyone is eagerly looking forward to warmer days, but you shouldn’t let the rest of the winter slip past you! Enjoy these chilly weather activities with the whole family. HOMEMADE CARAMEL APPLES Homemade treats are no doubt far better than their store-bought counterparts. Try your hand at making your own caramel apples for the whole family to enjoy. You can also add a number of toppings to liven things up: nuts, white or milk chocolate, coconut, sprinkles, or pecans. BACKYARD BONFIRE You may be tempted to stay indoors during these cold months, but heading outside for a bonfire is a great way to spend time with your family while enjoying the brisk weather. If you have a fire pit in your backyard, now is the perfect time to bundle up with some hot chocolate and s’mores. MOVIE NIGHT Gather your loved ones in the living room with popcorn, blankets, and a great film. Make the most of your winter evenings by cozying up and spending quality time with each other while watching some family favorites.

KNITTED SCARVES If you’re handy with knitting needles, now is the season to put them to work. Hand- knitted scarves are great gifts to give throughout the winter, and you

can also make it a family activity! Take some time to teach your kids how to knit and crochet to create scarves of their very own.

SHOULD PARENTS HELP PULL LOOSE BABY TEETH?

*Our 5th Dentistry From The Heart event* *Friday, Nov. 2* If your child is begging you to take out their loose tooth, don’t go searching for the string. Instead, take a tissue and gently apply pressure on the tooth with two fingers. The tooth should pop right Losing baby teeth is a rite of passage for children. It’s a sign that they are growing up! Many parents are excited to be part of this experience and re-enact the traditions of their childhood. How many of you remember a parent tying one end of a string to your tooth and the other to a doorknob, helping the tooth come out with a single slam? This “trick” for getting out a loose tooth is a time-honored tradition — and it’s also one of the worst ways to handle a loose baby tooth! You should never force a tooth to come out before it’s ready. If a tooth is yanked out before the root is fully dissolved, the root can break and cause a great deal of pain. Forcing a tooth out can also damage gum tissue or the surrounding teeth, leading to infection. Some parents want to get loose teeth out of their child’s mouth as soon as possible because they’re worried the tooth will get swallowed by accident. If this happens, you don’t have to be alarmed. A baby tooth is not a choking hazard and a swallowed tooth will pass through your child’s body without any trouble. At most, you may have to help your child write a letter to the tooth fairy explaining what happened.

out. However, if the tooth resists or your child complains about any pain, leave the tooth alone a little longer.

The best way to deal with a loose tooth is to have patience and let your child wiggle their tooth until it falls out on its own. Loose teeth will fall out when the time is right.
