REALIZADO UNA DÉCADA DESPUÉS de la Galería Metropóle, el Edificio Joelma (1968-72) se levanta en una situación particular del centro, donde convergen las dos principales avenidas que conforman el eje vial norte-sur de la ciudad. El contexto de su construcción se relaciona directamente con la masificación del automóvil: se emplaza sobre una placa de estacionamiento vertical, de forma helicoidal y con siete pisos. Junto a la torre de oficinas, el conjunto conforma un programa extremadamente denso, cuya superficie construida es 15 veces mayor a la superficie del terreno. De forma similar al emplazamiento del edificio de oficinas de la Galería Metropóle, en el volumen del Edificio Joelma se destacan dos partes: la primera es baja y corresponde a los estacionamientos, dando continuidad a la volumetría de las edificaciones vecinas; el segundo sector corresponde a la torre de oficinas, que se destaca de los edificios circundantes y se vuelve hacia el frente del terreno, conformando un hito vertical en el espacio público de la Praça das Bandeiras, en la intersección de las dos avenidas.
BUILT A DECADE AFTER Galeria Metropóle, the Joelma building (1968-72) stands in a particular situation in the city center, where the two main avenues that form the north- south axis of the city converge. The context of its construction is directly related to the mass use of the car: the building is placed on a vertical parking volume, with seven floors and a helicoidal shape. Including the office tower, the complex has an extremely dense program, with a GFA 15 times the ground area. Like the Galeria Metropóle office building, the volume of the Joelma building features two parts: the first is low and corresponds to the parking building, in continuity with the volumes of neighboring buildings; the second part corresponds to the office tower, standing out from the surrounding buildings and turning to the front of the plot, forming a vertical landmark in the public space of the Praça das Bandeiras at the intersection of the two streets.
