APPARENT OPPOSITIONS: BLOCK HOUSES IN THE SUBURB, BLOCK HOUSES IN THE CENTER

The House Over the Creek in Mar del Plata 13 (1943-1945), by Amancio Williams, can be considered a manifesto. A rectangular planar body arranged over a curved surface with a cubic parabolic shape separating it from the ground. The upper floor, basically an open plan, clearly showed the possibilities of its subdivision by means of partitions, with a scheme of linear distribution of the rooms on one side and a large continuous space on the other. Although the work is a formal and structural exception, Williams himself announced a broader horizon of exploration: “it is this way because I was studying new structures that would allow an open plan, since modern urbanism needs an open plan” 14 . Located in an area somewhat distant from the center, its opposition to nature affirmed the inner organization of the linear block in the sense of structural unity and reaffirmed the autonomy of the architectural form with respect to the urban condition. The house Dr. Curutchet commissioned in 1948 to Le Corbusier in La Plata adapted the conception of the block to the position between median walls 15 . The program combined a family house and a medical consult, which had to be arranged in a lot of 8.66 x 20 m with three blind sides. Le Corbusier distributed the program in two bodies, one in front towards the street -which acted as a bridge clearing the first level for a parking lot- and a posterior one for the house. Between them, a semipublic space for the access ramp and over which the block of the house advances on slender columns. Both cases showed the possibilities of modern architecture, both for the suburbs -which would become the privileged space for established society- as for the consolidated sectors with a composition based on blocks between median walls.
