SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
El medioambiente acuático del litoral del East River se caracteriza por la diversidad de hábitats y especies. Estos pueden verse afectados por la actividad de reurbanización de la costa, que busca incorporar todas las riquezas existentes. La información disponible sobre el área de estudio y lugares adyacentes del East River indica que la mayoría de las especies de peces son transitorias, relacionadas con las necesidades estacionales del hábitat, y que se desarrollan según las condiciones de flujo de mareas y disponibilidad de alimentos. Las consideraciones de diseño para acomodar las necesidades de vida acuática en este nuevo tramo suponen: 1. La reconfiguración de las estructuras sobre el agua para que no se produzca un incremento de superficies construidas versus la densidad de áreas acuáticas según cada tramo de profundidad y diversidad de especies. 2. Que lo nuevo o reconstruido para la estructuración con pilones sea debidamente espaciado, permitiendo el adecuado flujo de mareas debajo de la explanada y minimizar la producción de sedimentaciones. 3. De ser requerido y según las corrientes de marea y de sedimentación proyectadas, se agregarán elementos estructurales al hábitat modificado, para generar áreas que fomenten el poblamiento de especies acuáticas vertebradas e invertebradas.
The aquatic environment of the East River coastline is characterized by the diversity of its habitats and species. These may be affected by the coastal redevelopment activity, which seeks to incorporate all the existing resources. The available information on the study area and adjacent sites of the East River indicates that most fish species are transient, related to seasonal habitat needs, and fluctuate according to tidal flows and food availability. The following design considerations accommodate the needs of aquatic life in this new section: 1. The reconfiguration of the structures on water so that there is no increase of built surfaces to affect the density of aquatic areas in each section of depth and diversity of species. 2. The new or rebuilt pylon structuring shall be properly spaced, allowing the adequate flow of tides below the esplanade and minimizing sedimentation. 3. Structural elements shall be added to the modified habitat to generate areas that encourage the settlement of vertebrate and invertebrate aquatic species, if required, and according to estimated tidal and sediment flows.
THE ESPLANADE
The most important aspect for a successful pier project is dealing with the boundary situation: the boundary of the city is the direct interface between land and water. And a rich border will energize activities throughout the year and provide new attractions and comfort for those who reside, work and visit the area. The new East River front is intended as a series of “projects” complementary to each other, addressing the problems and opportunities of each sector and area of study. These projects share formal and material features to maintain a common identity, which will consistently mark the new coastline.
LA EXPLANADA
El aspecto más importante para que un proyecto de muelle sea exitoso es el tratamiento de la condición de borde: el límite de la ciudad es la directa interfaz entre la tierra y el agua. Y un borde rico generará actividades durante todo el año y proporcionará nuevos atractivos y confort para quienes residan, trabajen y visiten el sector. El nuevo frente del East River está pensado como una serie de "proyectos" complementarios entre sí, pero que abordarán los problemas y las oportunidades propias de cada sector y del área de estudio. Estos proyectos comparten rasgos formales y materiales para mantener una misma identidad, que marcará uniformemente la nueva línea de costa.

La construcción de un nuevo muelle permite convertir zonas en desuso en espacios públicos, y proveer hábitats saludables para la fauna costera local. Estas nuevas estructuras serían construidas de manera sustentable para permitir el desarrollo del hábitat natural. A través del diseño y desarrollo de plataformas en altura con pilones debidamente distanciados entre sí, las estructuras sumergidas impactarán de menor manera, a fin de reducir la formación de sedimentos y garantizar el flujo natural del río, funcionando así como un catalizador medioambiental. The construction of a new dock allows the conversion of disused areas into public spaces, and provides healthy habitats for the local coastal wildlife. These new structures shall be built in a sustainable way to allow the development of the natural habitat. Through the design and development of elevated platforms with pylons properly distanced from each other, the submerged structures will have less impact, to reduce the formation of sediments and ensure the natural flow of the river, thus functioning as an environmental catalyst.
