CIVIL MARRIAGES & CIVIL PARTNERSHIPS
What is a civil marriage? It’s a non-religious, legal ceremony performed by two Registrars. What is a civil partnership? It could be a simple signing of the schedule with two witnesses or combined with a ceremony performed by a Registrar. Choosing Your Venue From a simple statutory ceremony with two witnesses, to celebrations in our beautiful ceremony rooms or licensed venues in the centre of historic towns, near rivers or on a country estate – and of course, also in locations of your choice.
Ceremonies Outside Following a relaxation of the law, you can have your legal ceremony outside within the grounds of a licensed venue. This change gives you more choice in how you celebrate and personalise your ceremony. Venues may have designated ceremony areas, so please discuss your plans with the venue co-ordinator and let us know. Locations of Your Choice We offer celebratory ceremonies in locations of your choice, such as your home, garden or a special place. Our duo ceremony package includes both your legal and your celebrant led ceremony for one fee.

GIVING NOTICE Couples that wish to have a marriage or civil partnership at a licensed venue or registration office in England and Wales are required to give legal notice. Your ceremony should also be booked with the venue or registration office before a notice appointment is made. What is legal notice? A notice of marriage or civil partnership is a legal declaration given in person by each of you, usually at the registration office in the district where each person lives. It is venue specific and valid for 12 months from the date it is given. Notices are publicly displayed for 28 days before a marriage or civil partnership schedule can be issued, this may be extended to 70 days, by the Home Office, for couples subject to immigration control. A marriage or civil partnership cannot take place if the legal preliminaries are not completed in sufficient time.
Booking your notice Fees are payable at the time of booking your appointment and may not be refunded if you fail to attend or you do not present the required documents. Scan the QR code to find out what documents are required for legal notice and to book your appointment online.
For marriage ceremonies in the Church of England or a Church in Wales legal notice is not required, unless either party is a non-EEA national. All advice should be sought from the relevant parish office. For marriage ceremonies in other Religious Buildings , after arranging a ceremony with the officiant (and the registration office if there is no authorised person at the building), you will both need to book an appointment to give legal notice.
