When Tatiana, a young country girl, is introduced to Onegin, a worldly aristocrat bored with the city, he becomes the object of her innocent and unyielding affection. Yet, in his eyes, he sees only a coltish girl who reads too many romance novels. When fate brings them back together years later, Onegin finds himself yearning for the love he once dismissed— only to face the devastating consequences of his past actions. John Cranko’s Onegin is a timeless tale of love, rejection, and regret. Using an arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s compositions, the ballet features well-developed characters with rich psychological depth, who evolve through compelling character arcs as the story unfolds. Premiering in 1965, Cranko created his three-act ballet for Stuttgart Ballet, based on the novel Eugene Onegin by Alexander Pushkin. As artistic director, he transformed the company into a creative Eden, cultivating a thriving environment that influenced the dance world for years to come. Cranko encouraged his dancers to be artists, technicians, and choreographers, and Stuttgart Ballet became a fertile ground for future choreographic talent, producing legendary choreographers like Jiří Kylián, John Neumeier, and William Forsythe. Cranko’s Onegin is one of the defining ballets of this rich artistic legacy, and it continues to resonate in the dance world today. Its profound emotional depth and groundbreaking choreography have made it a cornerstone of the classical ballet repertoire. “Cranko’s reading is a miracle of dramatic economy: each step reveals character; each exchange drives the story forward.” -Financial Times

Rock, Roll & Tutus September 18 - 28, 2025
A compelling mixed repertory program showcasing four expressive works that blend classical ballet with groundbreaking contemporary artistry. Renowned choreographer Brett Ishida returns with her 2024 work, what i was thinking while i was waltzing —a raw, realistic story elevated by bold, breathtaking costume design. Set to Oliver Davis’ Frontiers, Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra , Illuminate is a movement-based work choreographed by Soloist Jacquelyn Long. Originally created for the 2023 Margaret Alkek Williams Jubilee of Dance, Illuminate explores the origins of ideas, inspiration, and energy, examining how some people inspire themselves, while others find inspiration through connections with others. Divided into three movements, Illuminate is brought to life through the brilliant costume design of Holly Hynes, who uses yellow and gray to symbolize the theme of ideas and inspiration. Long hopes the piece, open to interpretation, will “light something joyous inside for those who watch.” Set to eight classic Rolling Stones tracks, including “Paint It, Black,” “Ruby Tuesday,” and “Sympathy for the Devil,” Rooster captures the spirit of the ‘60s and flips it on its head with humor, style, and swagger. Christopher Bruce draws inspiration from the Stones’ machismo lyrics and takes a playful jab, resulting in a fast-paced, lighthearted work—with just a bit of bite. Created in 1991 for Geneva Ballet, Rooster has gained widespread popularity, traveling from London Contemporary Dance (where Mick Jagger himself sat in the front row) to its American premiere at Houston Ballet in 1995 and beyond. As Houston Ballet’s former associate choreographer, Bruce has a longstanding, celebrated history with the Company, having created and staged popular works like Ghost Dances and Hush . A grand celebration of Houston Ballet’s strength and dedication, Stanton Welch’s Vi et animo captures the very essence of its multiple meanings: with heart and soul, with courage, and with commitment. Featuring nearly the entire company, Vi et animo blends powerful ensemble work with virtuosic solos that push the boundaries of classical technique. The work was created in 2023 for the Margaret Alkek Williams Jubilee of Dance, commemorating Welch’s 20th anniversary as Artistic Director. It is fittingly driven by Tchaikovsky’s illustrious Piano Concerto No. 1 , a lavish showcase of virtuosity, power, and splendor. “a sensation...fast, furious and wild” -Judith MacKrell of London’s The Independent

Sylvia February 26 - March 8, 2026
Atop Mount Olympus, Stanton Welch’s Sylvia blends Greek mythology into a powerful story of love where three fierce women drive the story: Sylvia, the fearless huntress; Artemis, the commanding goddess; and Psyche, the compassionate mortal. Anchoring the tale, Sylvia, a warrior in Artemis’ army, is struck by Eros’ arrow, causing her to fall in love with a mortal shepherd. Welch’s multilayered narrative dives between mythical and human realms as the three heroines each journey on their own path to love, leading to a tale of mayhem, mischief, magic, and romance. Premiering in Houston and Sydney in 2019, Welch’s Sylvia has garnered critical acclaim for its modern revival of this rarely performed classic. Welch crafts nuanced pas de deux for each leading lady between dramatic sword fights and comedic interactions. All the while, the reimagining unfolds against legendary theater designer Jérôme Kaplan’s ever-changing modular set pieces, providing the perfect backdrop for the otherworldly projections by Tony Honors for Excellence recipient Wendall K. Harrington. Expertly tying it all together is lighting design by Lisa J. Pinkham, making Sylvia a true collaboration of artistic excellence. Underscoring it all is Léo Delibes’ masterful score, which Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky once praised for its “charm, elegance, richness of melody, rhythm, and harmony.” So deeply inspired by its deft grandeur, Tchaikovsky famously remarked that he would not have composed Swan Lake had he heard Sylvia first. “Incredible dancers, clever choreography and a striking score, Sylvia is never dull, not for one moment.” -Houston Press

“...wildly colorful and imaginative,
visually and kinetically. No movement feels derivative.” -Bachtrack
Artistic Director Stanton Welch AM adds another thrilling world premiere to Houston Ballet’s diverse repertoire with a premiere set to Mason Bates’ Stereo is King . Bates, a DJ and composer of the Grammy-winning opera The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs , has earned a reputation for subverting the expectations of classical music by uniquely combining orchestral and electronic sounds. Bates’ Stereo is King puts the spotlight on percussion—featuring indigenous instruments like Thai gongs and Tibetan prayer-bowls—and incorporates hard-panned stereo effects, phasing between antiphonal tribal grooves and surreal ambience. Bates’ contemporary score, paired with Welch’s signature touch, will undoubtedly result in an immersive performance that pushes the boundaries of both music and movement. Translated from French, “petite mort” means “little death.” Jiří Kylián’s Petite Mort features subtle sensualism and a contemplation on life and death. This work was created for the Salzburg Festival to commemorate the bicentennial of Mozart’s death. Set to two of Mozart’s most beloved piano concertos, this striking ballet features six women, six men, and six fencing foils—each playing a pivotal role in the choreography. The foils are manipulated with exquisite timing and precision, becoming dynamic partners in the performance and adding a layer of complexity to the dancers’ movements. Kylián posits, “maybe so, that in the moment of pleasure we are reminded of the fact that our lives are of a relatively short duration, and that death is never too far from us.” Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s Broken Wings , a Houston premiere, is a narrative ballet inspired by Frida Kahlo’s life and art, created in 2015 for the English National Ballet. Drawing from Kahlo’s paintings, the ballet incorporates surrealist elements, with a score by Peter Salem and featured Mexican folk song La Llorona . The story features three human characters, with male dancers representing Kahlo’s self-portraits, symbolizing her strength and grounded nature. The ballet highlights Kahlo’s transformation of personal pain into art, focusing on her unapologetic personality and deep connection to her Mexican roots. Diego Rivera, Kahlo’s husband and creative partner, plays a central role in her life and work. Through Broken Wings , Lopez Ochoa celebrates Kahlo’s resilience and the indigenous influences in her art, offering a powerful portrayal of her legacy.

“ ...when all comes to stillness and
the evening’s magic evanesces; dance is only a transitory gift.” -The Guardian
Inspired by Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 and created for Houston Ballet in 2012, Tapestry is a dazzling showcase for a small ensemble, where diverse bodies and styles come together in unity. Stanton Welch AM was inspired by a photograph of a dobby loom—a weaving device used to create intricate patterns—which reminded him of a ballet company: many individual parts working together to form something beautiful. Like the loom’s design, Welch’s choreography weaves movement into unexpected, captivating patterns, revealing the beauty of complexity and flow. Alice Topp returns to Houston Ballet in Spring 2026 to create her first work for the Company. In 2019, she choreographed Lighthouse on Houston Ballet II, marking the beginning of a meaningful connection with the organization. Born in Bendigo, Australia, Topp began dancing at age four and pursued classical ballet training at various schools. Her early professional career included time with the Royal New Zealand Ballet, as well as a period of recovery from a serious injury before joining The Australian Ballet. Though she hadn’t originally set out to become a choreographer, Topp rose to prominence and became one of only two female resident choreographers in The Australian Ballet’s history. Her works— Aurum, Little Atlas , and others—have garnered critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including the 2019 Helpmann Award for Best Ballet. In a 1972 letter to the editor of Ballet Review , Jerome Robbins wrote: “There are no stories to any of the dances in Dances at a Gathering . There are no plots and no roles. The dancers are themselves dancing with each other to that music in that space.” Rather than following a narrative, the ballet unfolds as a series of solos, duets, and ensemble moments performed by ten dancers, capturing the spirit of community, nostalgia, joy, and intimacy. Premiering in 1969, Dances at a Gathering marked Robbins’ return to New York City Ballet after a 13-year absence. Now making it’s Houston premiere, set to 18 piano pieces by Frédéric Chopin—including mazurkas, waltzes, and études—the choreography reflects the Polish roots and Parisian elegance of Chopin’s music.

Giselle June 11-21, 2026
Closing the 2025-2026 season is Stanton Welch’s reimagined version of one of ballet’s most revered works, Giselle . A cornerstone of 19th-century Romanticism, Giselle tells the heart-wrenching story of a peasant girl tragically betrayed by an aristocrat posing as a commoner. Premiering in 2016, Welch’s fresh interpretation for Houston Ballet draws upon the unedited 1941 version of Adolphe Adam’s score, expanding the narrative to offer dancers greater emotional depth in their roles. With its themes of love, betrayal, and death, Giselle is brought to life by acclaimed Italian designer Roberta Guidi di Bagno through stunning sets and costumes. While the original 1841 version by Marius Petipa is a hallmark of classical ballet for its groundbreaking storytelling and psychological depth, Giselle also holds a special place in Houston Ballet’s history. In 1967, a one-night-only performance by Nina Popova’s ballet school ignited the city’s passion for ballet, ultimately leading to the founding of Houston Ballet in 1969. “…Giselle continues to fascinate today because of its perfect illustration of impossible love and its ability to evoke universal sentiments.” -Sortiraparis
