Torque Control System Optimizes Medical Device Manufacturing

CASE STUDY FORTUNE 50 HEALTHCARE MANUFACTURER

Solutions A SINGLE TOOL WITH BUILT-IN CONTROLS

Vargas recommended that they consider an SDC controller that would enable them to use a single driver for all of their torque assembly needs. After a demonstration of how this programmable instrument could account for the various torque requirements all with the same driver, the company was excited to consolidate and simplify the assembly process. The SDC controls for torque, speed, and the angle of the device. It also has a soft start and stop feature which reduces the risk of cross-threading and overtightening. Results THE ADVANTAGES OF CONSOLIDATION ADD UP With the new controller, they have the precision needed to ensure quality manufacturing in a single device. The company decided to implement controllers throughout this new production line and has recently upgraded to the most recent Mountz model, the MDC. While they still use the E-DRIVE electric screwdrivers in a number of other equipment assembly applications, for their most delicate projects, the precision control offered by the MDC is key. While the controllers are individually more expensive than a single driver, because they only needed one device versus seven, there was an economic advantage to consolidate. Likewise, not forcing operators to switch tools in the middle of assembly saved time and reduced worker errors. The end result was enhanced quality and greater efficiency in production. For a new product introduction, that’s a winning combination.

“ The pressure to deliver quality is constantly

increasing. Companies are looking for solutions that can better ensure the quality of their manufacturing processes. When it comes to torque, controllers offer a valuable benefit. ” Roberto Vargas, Sr. Territory Sales Manager APPLY THESE IDEAS • Consider how many different torque requirements exist in your assembly to determine whether individual tools or a controller would be most valuable • To prevent cross-threading, consider a tool with soft start capabilities • To determine if you need a controller, assess whether there are multiple variables that require precision (e.g., torque, speed, angle)
