Meet My 2 Furriest Employees BLU AND BOS KEEP ME ON MY TOES!
If you’ve invested with me for a while, you might think you know everybody at my office. But have you met our four-legged team members?
They’re even worse about dogs on the golf course. Our house backs up to a fairway, and we have one of those invisible fences to keep the guys in check. Well, if someone comes walking their dog past our house — which happens a lot this time of year — Blue and Bos will break right through the fence and chase the dog down to say hello! They don’t mean anything bad by it; they just get a little over excited.
My Shetland sheepdogs, Blu and Bosworth, are practically Heartland Investment Partners employees! They keep us in check and always give my mood a boost after work. The two of them are a package deal, so we like
They’re protective, inquisitive, and fun- loving, which makes them good coworkers — but it also means they sometimes get distracted. You know, like guys do!”
to call them “the guys,” but they have different personalities just like everybody else on the team.
BLU GARMAN
• • •
49 years old (in dog years)
Smart, protective, well-behaved
Surprising fact: Like many other Shetland sheepdogs his age, Blu has diabetes and needs insulin shots twice a day.
We always know the guys have gone off task when we hear yelling, screaming, and barking from the back yard. I’m usually not home for this, but Gina is not a fan of trudging through the snow, rain, or slush to collect them from way down the fairway — especially when she’s stuck doing it in her slippers, sweats, and T-shirt, which happened more than once this winter! Those are pretty much the only times we have to consider disciplinary action. That said, when Blu and Bos put their minds to a task, they’re fantastic. One of their specialties is saying hi to me after work, and oh man, are they good at it. It’s nice to come home to two guys who can’t wait to see you. They bark and jump all over the place the second I get into the house. The way they go crazy, you’d think I’d been gone for two months, not 10 or 11 hours! Blue and Bos might not be model employees, but Gina and I don’t mind. They’ll always have a place on our team. –Darin Garman
BOSWORTH GARMAN
• 21 years old (in dog years) • Friendly, mischievous, curious
• Surprising fact: When we’re not looking, Bos likes to chase geese and dump over our kitchen trash can looking for snacks.
At 49, Blu is the older, more experienced guy of the pair, but they work well together despite their
age difference. They’re protective, inquisitive, and fun-loving, which makes them good coworkers — but it also means they sometimes get distracted. You know, like guys do! It’s usually their curiosity and protectiveness that get them into trouble. They don’t like diesel trucks, and if UPS or FedEx comes rumbling near our house, they’ll go crazy trying to chase the threat away down the road.

Is Ordering Takeout Wrecking Your Finances?
•
Put together a treat at home that you adore. There are a lot of ways to brew high- quality coffee at home the way you love it — and at a price you adore even more. Meet family, friends, and coworkers at a park or for a potluck. Set up weekly or monthly meal staples. Think now and you won’t have to later. It’s time to go recipe hunting! Consider if the total bill amount will fit in your budget, even if you have coupons or other discounts. Always have fast, lazy meal options when the need strikes. There are even healthy options in the frozen food aisles these days!
It’s worth asking yourself if spending hundreds of dollars every four weeks on cafes and restaurants is getting in the way of your financial goals. If not, great! But if you’re worried, then it’s time to ask yourself what you’re craving. Many U.S. adults buy restaurant food for a number of reasons, including: • A treat to get you through your commute or workday
•
•
•
Statistically speaking, as a U.S. adult, it’s likely that you eat at restaurants five times a week or more, but even if it’s cheap fast food, it might be doing more damage to your personal finances than you think. Data from the U.S. Department of Labor shows that the average American dines out 5.9 times per week and spends about $3,500 on eating out every year. To put it into another perspective, if you spent $15 per meal five times a week, that’s about $300 over four weeks.
• • •
Quality time with family, friends, or coworkers
Outsourced meal-planning
•
Save money with a restaurant discount or offer A helpful option when convenience is needed
•
You can also re-prioritize your spending, such as choosing to spend on restaurants while out with friends but not ordering food while at home alone. Even though we all love supporting our local restaurants, don’t forget to look out for your own future, too!
Whether you need a break, a window of time to socialize, or want to enjoy the thrill of a good deal, there are definitely ways to meet these needs in a budget-friendly way. Try doing the following:
DON’T MAKE THIS INVESTMENT MISTAKE! A Property Disaster Confession
Not long ago, a friend of mine got involved with a new investment … only to have his head handed to him on a platter! What happened is a cautionary tale for all of us. My guy was interested in getting better returns and wanted to invest in real estate. He was going to invest with me, but he got impatient waiting for “the right deal.” In the meantime, he saw a property on Loopnet.com. It was a two- unit in Kentucky for only $29,000! Yes, $29,000! The property was occupied with tenants paying $600 per month per unit. That meant $1,000 per month in income! The investor felt that at that price, he absolutely could not go wrong. So, he made a fatal mistake: He decided not to inspect the property himself. I mean, it’s just $29,000 — why spend the time? He closed and waited for the money to roll in.
Here’s the lesson, folks: INVESTING ISN’T THAT EASY.
If this property was such a great deal, why did it have to be advertised nationally? Why was it still available? Cheap deals like this come with huge issues. The owners or lenders want to dump them on anyone willing to take over their money, tenant, location, and property problems.
The good things in life (including investments) take time, effort, and energy.
The properties you’ll hear about from me are quality, so qualifying to invest in them takes WORK! Heck, one investor who got in on a nice 144-unit project with me last year waited over nine months for the opportunity. But the wait was WELL worth the returns! Do yourself a favor: Don’t fall for a cheap price. You might think you’ve bagged a winner, but you’ll ultimately be a loser for years and years to come. Take the time to do it right and you’ll save tens of thousands!
Months later, he has yet to see a dime of income. He’s scrambling to find out why and has to fly to Kentucky to deal with the fallout!
Let me tell you, there will be A LOT of fallout. No doubt this easy-to-buy $29,000 deal will turn into his worst nightmare and take three times that money to fix.

Darin’s dogs Blu and Bosworth are very cute, but they’re not newspaper famous in Iowa — at least not yet! In the Des Moines area, though, three pets have captured the whole city’s attention thanks to the news outlet Juice: Meet Tank the award-winning bulldog, Zoom the leash-trained cat, and Romeo the opera horse. NOTHING BEATS A TANK The bulldog is an iconic animal in Des Moines because it’s the mascot of local Drake University. Every year at the Drake Relays track and field event, the school celebrates the breed by hosting a “Most Beautiful Bulldog” contest. In 2015, Duane and Adora Smith’s bulldog Tank took the crown! Two-year-old Tank strutted his stuff in an army costume Duane and Adora made just for him. The judges couldn’t resist draping him in a blue and white cape and putting a crown on his wrinkly head. Tank’s owners told Juice that when he’s not competing, he loves to nap, play fetch and tug-of-war with a football, and most of all, eat! READY, SET, ZOOM! There are a lot of funny sayings about how different dogs and cats are: • Dogs come when they’re called; cats take a message and get back to you later. • Dogs are like kids. Cats are like roommates. • Women and cats will do as they please — men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. But there’s one Iowa cat that behaves more like a canine than a feline: Zoom! According to his owner Candy Haney, Zoom loves to be walked on a leash and begs her to take him out on the town every morning. The pure white cat is a regular at Des Moines’ Downtown Farmers’ Market. WHERE ART THOU, ROMEO? Romeo the horse is perhaps the best four-hooved actor in the state. He once took the stage at the Des Moines Metro Opera by storm with soprano Alexandra Lobianco on his back for “The Girl of the Golden West.” They brought the house down! According to Juice, Romeo is “the go-to horse in the area for parades, barrel courses, and other spectacles” and once even performed “with a drill team in a dark stadium, wearing a costume of LED lights.” Wow!
