Darin’s dogs Blu and Bosworth are very cute, but they’re not newspaper famous in Iowa — at least not yet! In the Des Moines area, though, three pets have captured the whole city’s attention thanks to the news outlet Juice: Meet Tank the award-winning bulldog, Zoom the leash-trained cat, and Romeo the opera horse. NOTHING BEATS A TANK The bulldog is an iconic animal in Des Moines because it’s the mascot of local Drake University. Every year at the Drake Relays track and field event, the school celebrates the breed by hosting a “Most Beautiful Bulldog” contest. In 2015, Duane and Adora Smith’s bulldog Tank took the crown! Two-year-old Tank strutted his stuff in an army costume Duane and Adora made just for him. The judges couldn’t resist draping him in a blue and white cape and putting a crown on his wrinkly head. Tank’s owners told Juice that when he’s not competing, he loves to nap, play fetch and tug-of-war with a football, and most of all, eat! READY, SET, ZOOM! There are a lot of funny sayings about how different dogs and cats are: • Dogs come when they’re called; cats take a message and get back to you later. • Dogs are like kids. Cats are like roommates. • Women and cats will do as they please — men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. But there’s one Iowa cat that behaves more like a canine than a feline: Zoom! According to his owner Candy Haney, Zoom loves to be walked on a leash and begs her to take him out on the town every morning. The pure white cat is a regular at Des Moines’ Downtown Farmers’ Market. WHERE ART THOU, ROMEO? Romeo the horse is perhaps the best four-hooved actor in the state. He once took the stage at the Des Moines Metro Opera by storm with soprano Alexandra Lobianco on his back for “The Girl of the Golden West.” They brought the house down! According to Juice, Romeo is “the go-to horse in the area for parades, barrel courses, and other spectacles” and once even performed “with a drill team in a dark stadium, wearing a costume of LED lights.” Wow!
