The History of the Kentucky Derby

Published by Newsletter Pro • www.NewsletterPro.com

The History of the Kentucky Derby GIDDY UP! Hooves are hitting the dirt this month at Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. Since 1875, races have been taking place at Churchill Downs, and the Kentucky Derby has run continuously each year. Also known as the “Run for the Roses,” 3-year-old thoroughbreds race for 1.25 miles, producing what many believe to be the most exciting two minutes of continuous action of all sporting events. All of the fun originated from overseas inspiration. Back in 1872, William Clark’s (from the Lewis and Clark pair) grandson, Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., attended the Epsom Derby in England and was awestruck by the spectacle. He was determined to recreate the event back home, so with the assistance of his uncles, John and Henry Churchill, he organized a group of race fans known as the Louisville Jockey Club. On May 17, 1875, the first Kentucky Derby took place at Churchill Downs racetrack. Today, many gather to observe the races and place bets, and there’s even a fashion tradition, too — hats! The Kentucky Derby is now just as much about fashion as it is about the horses! The hats displayed each year are fun and exciting and make for a great time! In fact, sporting a hat to the races is actually believed to be a form of good luck! On May 7, whether you’re watching from home or lucky enough to attend, this year’s 20 thoroughbreds running at Churchill Downs are sure to get your heart racing! It’ll be a grand time!
