Throughout my life, my mother has represented many things. At times, she was my great shield, protecting me from a world I wasn’t ready for because being born with Asperger’s could have become an obstacle to achieving my dreams. But while she protected me, she also prepared me to face life without letting me lose myself along the way. She has been my endless field of love, the home I always return to recharge when life gets tough. My mother is my greatest inspiration, and thinking of her drives me to keep going, even when everything seems difficult. I don’t see her as someone tireless or perfect but as a woman who, with all she knows and is, faces every challenge with courage. If I ever decide to become a moth- er, I want to be like her: a mother who knows she wasn’t born knowing how to do it, who sees motherhood as a never-ending process where you discover yourself as you discover your children. She’s a mother who makes space to listen to us, learn from us, and, above all, improve every day. She doesn’t let herself be defeated by her mistakes but apologizes because she knows they are part of a lifetime journey. I know that even when she’s no longer here, her love and wisdom will continue to guide me. A part of our mothers always lives in us, and that’s something that never fades.
My mother passed away on a Monday. That year felt like an endless Monday, and a light rain began to fall, soaking my life for many months. She was my light, my home, and my safe place. She filled my hands with books and taught me to be the woman I am and the value of time and perseverance. She sorted out all the messy things when I divorced, and one day, when I was fighting with the world, she forced me to face the de - mons that lived inside me, and we defeated them one by one. Together. My mother was the woman of my life and taught me that life isn’t found in the places where we try to force it. She taught me to be a mother, gave meaning to the everyday things I found so hard to accept, and became my guardian angel. Tolstoy said that the salvation of the world was in the hands of mothers. The world should be ruled by a mother.
