Letters to Mothers

Zintle Mgidlana TP in South Africa

Mothers carry and guide us to become the strong individuals we wish to be. They are not only mothers to us but to the whole community. As someone who grew up in a township, I learned to appreciate my mother and the women who have played a big part in socializing me. My moth- er’s love taught me to appreciate all mothers out there because they do an incredible job raising us. My mom has played a significant part in becoming who I am today. Her warm love, wisdom, care, and kindness taught me to love and carry my- self. My mother’s love has shown me that you can show compassion in every situation, even those you are unhappy about. Through my mother’s strength, I remain resilient and keep my head up during difficult times. Her kindness has also taught me how to be gentle towards other people. I can communicate and express my thoughts freely because I was brought up to be a person who stands for what she believes in. I can take up space and form impactful connections with people because I keep in mind that we come from different environments, but conversations bring us together. My mother continuously encourages me to follow my dreams, and it is with her support that I am able to adapt to a new environment by being myself. That means doing a great job, showing care for others, express- ing my ideas, and finding ways to grow within the TP space. I believe I am the incredible person I am because an amazing mother raised me.
