and asked those in attendance: 'Where do you think the education of payroll should start? Should it be delivered to school pupils, to school leavers (15-16 year olds) or should it form part of inductions when entering the workplace?' There was agreement around the table how it’s crucial that early education is given on what pay and deductions from pay are, which also provides the opportunity to make people aware that payroll can be a rewarding career. Everyone needs to understand what payroll is, as well as what income tax and other deductions from their pay are, so that when they enter the world of work, they’re not surprised by the calculation from gross to net. But also, so that individuals understand how the tax system works when they start earning more and reaching different earnings thresholds. There’s often a misconception that once people start earning more that they’re taxed at the higher rate on all their earnings, not just those above the threshold. The conversation moved towards teaching young people about their payslip as a life skill within the curriculum. This would support a broader understanding of payroll in general and could reduce queries into payroll teams. The Payslip Statistics Report Survey highlighted that the most common query into payroll departments is about tax codes. Early education on the tax system and payroll could potentially reduce the number of those types of queries coming in. Then there’s showing how payroll can be a career of choice.
