GET TO KNOW OUR TEAM ASHLEY & ROD WASHINGTON
My husband, Roderick or Rod as he prefers to be called, and I actually met
discussingour views onmarriage and children. Rod askedme if I wanted to get married on Halloween and I thought it was a wonderful idea. I didn’t realize, however, that he was proposing. We’re both very laidback peoplewho don’t like the flashy productions that come with many engagement announcements, so it took me until his Birthday inOctober to ask, “Wait... Are we gettingmarried onHalloween? Like actuallymarried?”He laughed and said, “Well I did ask...” Typical us. We wanted to do the small ceremony at our favorite bar, Broad Street Cider, which is a very relaxed environment, never packed with people, and we went there on our third or fourth date. The issue now became, what werewegoing todress up as? Rod suggested a couples costume, but I dislike couples costumes so I suggestedwe share the same theme anddress as who we would like within the said theme. We, of course, chose Star Wars and I immediately said I was going as Han Solo; Belt, blaster, Chewie, and all. Rod wanted to go as Darth Maul, but I suggested someone with less makeup for our photos and he agreed to be Sith Lord. We got married onHalloween, with several friends coming out to have a drink with us and celebrate. While it was very cold that night, we now tease each other about howwe get to have a Halloween party that doubles as an anniversary party now, and we will have somany costumes to look back on in 50 years.

That’s when we both remembered we had met before, which was good because I was extremely skeptical about the online dating scene and had only tried it at several of my girlfriend’s insistence. We talked about how we both love Star Wars and I found out that Yoda and Darth Maul are his favorite characters, and he learned about my love of arthropods. In fact, he asked if we could go on another date to theAudubon Insectarium during brunch (we did and it was amazing). I asked what he was doing for the rest of the day, and he detailed out how he had to do laundry, how he might go climb. I remember smiling wider and wider as he spoke because I asked to see if he wanted to chat some more but in another location; he still laughs about how clueless he was during our first date. After we had been together for about a year, we started
