HAVE A LAUGH!

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN FROM LITERATURE’S MOST FAMOUS LAWYER LIFE LESSONS FROM ATTICUS FINCH

Atticus Finch is one of American literature’s most beloved characters. When Harper Lee wrote “To Kill a Mockingbird” in 1960, she crafted the small- town lawyer as a man of integrity and courage. Two years after the novel’s publication, a film version featuring Gregory Peck in the role of Atticus further cemented the character’s iconic status. To this day, Atticus is seen as a role model. Since January is when people are making their New Year’s resolutions, we thought it would be appropriate to share some lessons we can all learn from Atticus Finch. Empathize before you judge. Early in the novel, Atticus tells his daughter, Scout, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view … until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” Seeing things from the perspective of another allows us to understand what they’re thinking and feeling. When we take the time to empathize with people, we often find that our preconceived notions and judgments were wrong. Stand up for what’s right, even when it’s futile. Perhaps the most famous quotation from the novel is when Atticus defines courage. He says, “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.” All of us should go through life with this same undying passion to do what’s right. It can be hard to fight a losing battle, but Atticus reminds us that it’s worth it. Listen to your moral compass. Atticus describes a conscience as “the one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule.” It can be easy to be swayed by popular opinion, but don’t forget to listen to that little voice inside you. We live in a world with no shortage of noise. Cutting through it to hear your conscience is a valuable lesson indeed.
