Mountz Torque was approached by a loyal Aerospace client seeking to enhance their productivity. The aerospace company employed light assembly electric torque screwdrivers in its assembly operation to construct power modules situated beneath the middle seat in each plane row, facilitating passenger device charging. With 64 boxes needed per aircraft, retrofitting an entire fleet demanded swift delivery of substantial cage volumes. Simultaneously, maintaining quality was paramount, with cross-threading posing a genuine risk. Any box failure could ground an aircraft, underscoring the necessity of prioritizing assembly product quality.
CASE STUDY ELECTRONIC MANUFACTURING
CAPTURING PRECISION AT EVERY TURN Global Electronics Contract Manufacturer As the digital age marches forward, electronics assembly is in high demand. This global electronic contract manufacturer customer has locations around the world designed to meet the unique needs of every kind of assembly. In one of its US facilities, they contract manufacture servers and routers for industry leading companies. Because some of the boards being assembled cost upwards of a million dollars apiece, quality workmanship at every level of assembly is essential—down to every turn of a fastener. The need for capturing data about the manufacturing process and ensuring zero quality issues is paramount to success in the industry. For them, Mountz tools are an essential part of making that possible. Challenges ENSURING COMPLIANCE AT EVERY TURN Being able to document the torque applied to every screw in its assembly was key to being able to provide its customers accurate documentation of compliance. Previously, compliance rested squarely on the shoulders of each operator, but their team was concerned that the operator might let go of the tool before hitting the correct torque value. There was even the possibility of using an incorrect bit, as everything was self-reported.
AT A GLANCE
CHALLENGES • Documentation and Compliance
• Quality workmanship at every level of assembly eliminating user error SOLUTIONS • Electronic control tools and controllers for data collection • Color coded bits and bit socket tray preventing operator errors RESULTS • Immediate access to the right bit at the right time • Data capture throughout assembly ensuring compliance

Solutions DATA COLLECTION AND A CUSTOM TRAY SOLUTION
To ensure the right torque is achieved with every fastener tightened, Mountz provided a complete complement of MD-Series DC Control Tool and the MDC Controller for data collection. However, guaranteeing every operator only used the right bit required development of a custom solution. The answer was the Bit Socket Tray with sensors to detect colors and different color tape wrapped around each bit. The tray connects directly to the MDC Controller When a board arrives to the assembler, they scan the bar code on the assembly base. This indicates which color bit they should take from the four-position tray. When the bit is attached, the tool is automatically set for the correct torque specs. If the incorrect bit is selected or no bit is attached, the tool has no power, preventing assembly errors. Results ASSURANCE AND EFFICIENCIES Data capture has been implemented throughout the assembly line. The company has implemented the new tray-based approach to quality control in 12 stations on its line so far. They plan to roll out an additional 20+ units over the coming months. In addition to limiting errors in assembly, the new solution also helps ensure immediate access to the right bit at the right time. By eliminating the ability of assemblers to borrow bits from other stations, this bit socket tray can reduce the risk of missing bits because the tool only works if every bit is where it belongs. This can help save time looking for missing bits, as well as the cost of replacing bits that mysteriously “walk off.”
APPLY THESE IDEAS • Implement data capture solutions to document quality compliance • Use sensor-based technology to ensure usage of the correct bit • Put solutions in place to prevent bit migration to other stations virtually impossible for bits to walk off, saving time and money. ” Kristen Gilliam, Mountz Territory Sales Manager “ In addition to providing quality assurance, this new solution helps ensure operators have the bits they need when they need them. It’s
