Emergency Response Plan: Radiological Materials Transportation Accident Plan (RAMTAP) Located in the Nebraska State Emergency Operations Plan, ESF #8, Appendix #3 Escorts: Escorts in general are not required, unless specific federal regulations require an escort by a qualified law enforcement authority. Fees/Permits: Spent fuel, HLW, and TRU waste: $3,100 per cask [Nebraska Revised Statutes Sections 71- 3523 to 71-3528] The carrier must file a transportation plan if the shipment deviates from the preferred route for nuclear material. There are fees for the carrier if the shipment exceeds size restrictions (height or width) and load limits (weight). These permits can be obtained through the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Permit Section. Inspections: Carriers may be subject to the CVSA Level VI inspection process applicable to shipments of nuclear material. These inspections will be completed by officers of the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division Key events and holidays: As a general rule, shipments should not be scheduled on Saturdays when there is a home football game for the University of Nebraska – Lincoln or for Nebraskaland Days in North Platte, NE, during mid-June. Shipments must be scheduled so that they do not conflict with commuter traffic time periods or specific construction activity that would compromise security or traffic flow issues.

Major travel holiday periods such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and July 4th should be avoided if at all possible. Safe parking considerations: Areas suitable for safe parking can be identified by consulting the Nebraska State Patrol. Statutes pertaining to radioactive materials transportation: Motor Carrier Act [Nebraska Revised Statutes sections 75- 363 et seq.] Radiation Control Act [Nebraska Revised Statutes sections 71- 3501 et seq.] “[TRU] waste means radioactive waste materials containing alpha-emitting radioactive elements, with radioactive half-lives greater than five years, having an atomic number greater than 92 in concentrations in excess of one hundred nanocuries per gram” Nebraska Revised Statute 71-3524
