m arine. The philosophy was consist en t; it culm inated in th e worship of blood and iron and in th e dethrone m ent of th e living God. Before th is philosophy had thrown off its mask, it had poisoned w ith its rationalism th e theology of generations of studen ts from Scotland, England and America who had sought a t Ger man Universities th e final touch of cu ltu re upon th e ir studies. Now th a t it has throw n off its mask, th e re stand s revealed a monster plot tin g world dominion, th e wreck of civil ization and th e destruction of Chris tia n ity itself. Loud are th e cries ag ain st German K u ltu r. L et th is now be identified w ith Evolution, an d th e tr u th begins to be told. Science has again and again set aside as un tru stw o rthy the so-called discov eries of Evolution, has compelled the g rea t German Evolutionist Haeckel to confess th a t his draw ings of m issing links were from im agination ra th e r than from objects found, has driven him from his university ch air and has compelled him to adm it th a t, “Most modern investigators of science have come to the conclusion th a t th e doc trin e of Evolution and p articu larly of Darw inism is in erro r and cannot be m aintained,”— and yet in spite of such adm issions from men recognized as au tho rities in th e ir respective lines, the doctrine of Evolution appears to ru le as absolutely in th e Educational world as if it were not a moribund hypothesis, already discarded by many and to be dis carded by others when scientific evidence rath e r than reputation for scholarship is allowed th e deciding voice. Evolution in one or ano th er form has been a fascinating field for the im agination from the days of Democri tu s and H eraclitus to th e present, bu t now th a t Evolution has been found to pry th e modern world from its hinges, to attack every b reak fast table and to

even rob us of our m anliest sons, the tim e has come to recognize th a t erro r given th e place of tru th is well-nigh omnipotent for evil.

AUTOCRACY OF ROMANISM “At a Hjigh Mass a t St. P a tric k ’s Cathedral, w ith His Em inence Cardinal F arley occupying th e throne, Tuesday, A ugust 6, which preceded th e Supreme Convention of th e K nights of Colum bus, th e R t. Rev. W illiam T. Russel, Bishop of Charleston, South Carolina, delivered th e sermon from which we make the following extracts from The Columbian, Yol. 46, No. 33, August 16, 1918. “ In conclusion, le t me assure you th a t we have no misgivings in respect to the future. Who can forget th a t historic scene when a t th e first meeting of th e N ational Catholic W ar Council, your G rand Knight, speaking for the whole body of th e K nights of Colum bus, said in effect: ‘We are first and always Catholics; we pledge ourselves unreservedly to obey our sp iritual superiors in th e United States. W hat ever is ours, th e fru its of our though t and endeavor, is yours, to command.’ Then while all kneeled, th e four bishops begged God’s blessing on th e g reat work we had begun. God g ra n t th a t th is sp irit of obedience and whole h earted loyalty to au th o rity may ever an im ate your g reat body.” P riestly autocracy is more to be dreaded in any country th a n P russian autocracy. Implicit obedience is owed to God only. The su rrend er of our conscience to a hum an being is likely to be a fatal su rrender.— Dr. Chas. Blanchard.
