Remember th a t th e people to whom these words were first spoken, had ju st (come up out of idolatrous Egypt and th a t they were going into a land where they would see idolatry w ith all its cruelty and beastiality on every hand. Every man has some ru l ing passion, or some purpose th a t dom inates his life,— th a t is his god. Many a man carries his god around in his pocket. How much th e believer owes to Jehovah for revealing H imself to him , adopting th e believer into his fam ily as one of H is sons (Jno. 1:12; 1st Jno. 3:1, 2). The second commandment forbids all idolatry. An idol is any visible rep re sentation of the object of worship. Idols are made to image m an’s ideas. God gave th e world no pictu re or photo graph or sta tu e of H imself or Christ.

The giver of the ten commandments is a real person. Our lesson sta rts out w ith “ God spake all LESSON these words.” See EXPOSITION th e surroundings olf J . H. H u n ter th e ceremony of th e giving of th é law, as related in Deut. 5:22-29. The Law Giver is a powerful person. The God who gave Israel th e ten laws, was th e same person who had destroyed th e ir enemies, and brought them up out of Egypt. He was also a loving person. He had provided for th e ir every need, in addition to delivering them out of Egyptian bondage. His love was ju st as tru ly m anifested in these laws, th a t He now gave them , as it had been mani fested in His previous dealings w ith them . “God is love,” and all His laws come to us ou t of H is loving heart.
