SAVORING THE SWEETEST MOMENTS Create Great Summer Memories to Last a Lifetime!
August is notoriously known as the dog days of summer — it’s hot and sunny and points to the last of the family vacations, barbecues, and adventures. It’s a great time to reflect on the memories made over the past few months and those from summers past! Adam’s Summer Memories For me, my greatest childhood memory from summer takes me all the way back to when I was a teen. Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop, my paternal grandparents, lived in Delaware; and when I was just 14 years old, I took my first solo trip from our home in Virginia to visit them for two whole weeks. Mom-Mom was a homemaker and Pop-Pop was a retired electrician, and they had tons of time to spend special one-on-one time with me. We spent most of those two weeks at the beach and exploring nature — after our chores, of course, because work always came first, then fun. Whenever we spent time indoors (which wasn’t very much), we kept busy with puzzles and card games, like poker and war. We also watched TV, but at that time, there weren’t too many stations to choose from. During my stay, Pop-Pop worked on an outdoor shower project and involved me in it. I learned a lot about plumbing, wood surround, and hard work. We also ventured to an Italian restaurant, where I had the best stromboli of my life. To this day, I can still taste it! It was an awesome summer with amazing people and memories to last forever! -Adam Wolf, CPA, CFP® Robin’s Summer Memories During the summer between seventh and eighth grade, I attended my second year at Camp Lutherock near Boone, North Carolina. It was a faith-based camp, and I went with my church
youth group. We did the Outdoor Adventure Program for a week, which took us on a two-day hike through the Appalachian Mountains that spanned 20 miles. We had to set up our own tents, cook our own food, and carry 40-pound backpacks. It was the most difficult thing I had done but also the most fun. I still remember the chicken and rice from boil-in-a-bag rice with canned chicken — I thought it was so good! We even went on a whitewater river trip along the Nolichucky River. We sang songs, played games, made new friends, and strengthened old friendships. I got to see fireflies, drink fresh mountain stream water, play in the woods, and do things I had never done before! It was a summer to remember! -Robin (Marketing and Events Coordinator) Andrea’s Summer Memories When I was 5 years old, my mom and I were living together in a two-bedroom apartment in the neighborhood of Crystal Beach in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada). One of my best summertime memories was taking short walks to Dairy Queen for some of my favorite ice cream: a banana split or soft-serve ice cream dipped in chocolate. I just loved how the chocolate would harden and crunch as I ate it. After indulging in this yummy treat, we would head to the park and play for what felt like hours. I fondly remember spending time in later summers with my cousins, grandparents, and other family members at amusement parks nearby. Now, 30 years later, my mom has relocated to Jacksonville and lives with my husband and me. We are together again until she finds a home of her own, and I couldn’t be happier to have her nearby! -Andrea (Director of First Impressions)

An Empty Nester’s Guide to New Connections FRIENDS WANTED!
after people become parents.” So, it’s unsurprising that many empty nesters feel lonely and isolated after their children leave; friendships have taken the backseat to parenthood over the previous 18 years. Research, however, shows that a lack of social connections as individuals age can lead to a higher risk of depression, poor sleep, cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, and a weakened immune system. Even though making friends can be challenging for empty nesters and older adults, these three tips can help you find new friends! Get out and practice! Unfortunately, new friends won’t just show up at your door. Look for events in your community and attend them! It may feel nerve-wracking initially, but most events typically only last an hour, and you can
try as many as you’d like! You’ll be around people with similar interests, making finding new friends easier. Be intentional. If you attend an event or find yourself out and about, make a concerted effort to make friends, not just idle chit-chat. If you notice someone else sitting alone, strike up a conversation! Or, if you start talking with someone and really click with them, ask for their phone number or email to stay in touch. Stay optimistic. Not every person you meet will want to be friends, but that doesn’t mean you should stop trying. Even if all of your efforts only result in one new friendship, that’s one new person you didn’t have in your life before, and sometimes, that’s all it takes to make a difference.
When parents become empty nesters, they have much more time on their hands — more time with their spouses, after work, and more time to focus on what they want to do! But for many empty nesters, all this extra time can invoke loneliness — especially if they don’t have friends to share it with. The truth is that having kids and raising a family takes focus. For example, a survey by Action for Children found that 68% of parents felt they had become “cut off from friends, colleagues, and family after the birth of a child.” Another study from Demographic Research found that “the strength of friendships typically decreases Upcoming Coach’s Corner Webinars!

Eileen’s Summer Memories I was born in New Jersey; and at 6 months old, my family moved to the suburb of Middletown — just 15 minutes away from Sea Bright Beach along the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. When I was growing up, my mom was an elementary school teacher, and my dad was a traveling salesman. This meant he was only home on the weekends, so we always made the most of those two days! Normally, we would head to the beach; and while my brother and sister were big enough to brave the waves on their own, I needed a little help. So, I’d get up on my dad’s shoulders, and I felt like a queen way up there because my dad was so tall! Mom would have fun floating and swimming. These were the best days of summer. To beat the heat, we’d walk to a shack on the beach for some lemon Italian ice to cool off. We enjoyed Sea Bright until I was 9 years old, at which time we moved to North Carolina. I was on the swim team, AAU Division (Amateur Athletic Union), until I was 16 years old. Thank you, Sea Bright, for my love of the ocean and memorable family time! -Eileen (Director of Client Services)

We all wish our pets would be there for us in an emergency. Dogs, cats, and other animals can accomplish amazing feats when provided with enough love and care, and a cat from Liverpool named Willow recently proved that many times over. A cat’s sense of smell is incredibly effective at detecting when something is abnormal, and Willow used her nose to save her owner in the nick of time. For many with diabetes, falling into a diabetic coma is a constant concern, and they regularly check their blood sugar levels and take insulin shots to avoid that scenario. Amanda Jameson, a 51-year-old woman from Liverpool, received a diabetes diagnosis years ago but had always stayed on top of it. In April 2023, she fell asleep while her blood sugar was dangerously low. Thankfully, her cat, Willow, noticed something was wrong and sprang into action. Willow went to the living room, where Amanda’s husband had fallen asleep watching television. Willow proceeded to bite his leg and jump on him until he woke up around 4 a.m. He could tell something was wrong, as this was abnormal behavior for Willow, so he followed her to the bedroom, where he spotted his wife. She was slumped over and unresponsive, and he immediately called her an ambulance. Doctors informed Amanda’s husband that she was moments away from slipping into a diabetic coma, but Willow had smelled something off and gotten help before it was too late. A CAT’S NOSE KNOWS How Willow Saved Her Owner’s Life
Most pets would get a few extra treats for their heroism, but Willow’s feats earned her a more prestigious award. The National Cat Awards named Willow as a finalist for their “Moggy Marvels” category. If Willow wins, she’ll receive a trophy, a £200 pet store voucher, and a year subscription to Cats Protection’s “The Cat” magazine. Although Willow likely doesn’t care about the trophy or the subscription, she’ll be happy enough with £200 worth of goodies and her owner safely by her side.
