FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q : WHAT I S THE WEATHER L I KE I N KENYA I N JULY? A: Because Kenya has a tropical climate, you can expect hot temperatures all year round. In July, temperatures tend to hover around 29 °C (83 °F) during the day and lowers to about 16 °C (61 °F) at night. Q : WHAT SHOULD I WEAR WH I LE I N THE MAASA I MARA? A: Dress will be casual for the majority of the time. There will be laundry service available during your trip, so there is no need to bring along more than the necessities. Kenyan nights can be cool (in the mid-50s °F / 10 °C), so bring a lightweight jacket and heavy wool sweater with you. We have found that 100% cotton clothes are the coolest and most comfortable. Q : I S TH I S A GOOD T IME OF YEAR TO V I S I T? A: Absolutely. Around this time you will have the unique opportunity to see the Great Wildebeest Migration, which happens annually in the Mara. This time of year is also quite temperate, so it will be unlikely that you will be building a school in the rain!

Q : WI LL I HAVE ACCESS TO PHONE AND I NTERNET WH I LE I N KENYA ? A: Both phone and email communication is easily accessible in Nairobi. Cell phone service is intermittently available while you are staying at Bogani Cottages and Tented Camp. If you would like to have access to the Internet while staying in the Maasai Mara, we suggest getting in touch with your network provider to purchase a data plan. Q : HOW I S THE FOOD AND WATER AT BOGAN I COTTAGES AND TENTED CAMP? A: Filtered water is always available. Food is prepared fresh daily by our chefs and adheres to the highest safety standards. We are able to accommodate all dietary requirements at Bogani, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and food allergies. Q: WI LL THERE BE ELECTRICI TY WHI LE AT BOGANI AND WHAT IS THE VOLTAGE? A: Power at Bogani is generally available throughout the day from the local grid. At times, we rely on backup generator which would run between 6-11 p.m. only. During this time, you can charge your camera batteries and iPods. The voltage in Kenya is 240 V, and the electrical plugs are British-style with two flat blades and one flat grounding blade. Please make sure to bring a converter with you. We also provide a hair dryer (compatible with 240V) in each cottage and tent for your convenience. Q : I S THERE A MI N IMUM AGE FOR THE TR I P PART I C I PANTS GO I NG TO KENYA? A: No. We welcome guests of all ages! Whether young or old there is something for everyone. Parents of a young one? You’re in luck. Bogani Cottages and Tented Camp happily offers daycare service for your little one upon request. Q : CAN I BR I NG G I FTS FOR THE K I DS? A: We ask that you do not, as we work in solidarity with our partner communities. Put simply, your gift is your presence. We ask that our trip participants do not bring candy, toys or presents for community members, as we would like to promote fairness for all children. A portion of your trip cost goes to in-country communities to help support their basic needs.

Q : WHAT T IME ZONE I S KENYA I N? A: Kenya is on EAT (East African Time), and is 7 or 8 hours ahead of EST (Eastern Standard Time).

Q : CAN I BR I NG A LAPTOP, I POD, EXPENS I VE CAMERA ETC. ? A: We suggest travelling as lightly as possible to minimize the risk of damage to or loss of your possessions. For essential items, Bogani Cottages and Tented Camp provides a small safe in every tent and cottage.

Q : ARE TO I LETR I ES PROV I DED AT BOGAN I COTTAGES AND TENTED CAMP? A: Yes, shampoo, conditioner and soap will be provided.

Q : I S THERE F I LTERED WATER? A: We provide filtered water for our guests to drink. We bring jugs full of clean drinking water to our camps and then recycle them after each trip. We recommend bringing along a good water bottle that you can fill up as you head from our camp for your day trips to the community.

BERRY’S STORY

I jumped at the chance to again chair the YPO ME to WE African Adventure Family Trip to Kenya. We often struggle to plan holidays for our family that will “stop time” and create lasting memories. We search for adventures that allow us to have fun spending quality time together while exploring new parts the world. We organized this YPO trip in 2018 and it was fantastic. Connecting with like-minded YPO families on a bucket list adventure was priceless. We are continuing to push the limits to make this even more of an ‘only in YPO’ experience, so be prepared for this trip to exceed your expectations! Four years ago, at the urging of my then 12-year-old daughter, our family went on a ME to WE Trip to Kenya. The trip was amazing in so many ways. We connected with local families and experienced daily life in Kenya. We visited schools and family homes, helped pick vegetables, shopped in a local market, carried water on our backs and helped to build a hospital. Our family shared experiences that none of us will ever forget. My children were exposed to a new culture, language, tradition and way of life so very different than their own. My kids learned that you are never too young to make a difference in our world. We returned from our adventure with a greater appreciation of the simple things that make us happy. The trip changed our family in countless positive ways. I hope you will join us in Kenya as every family should take a

YPO AFRICAN ADVENTURE FAMILY TRIP: KENYA

TRIP DATES: JULY 16 - 22, 2019

THE NOORDHOEK FAMILY’S STORY

The YPO Me to We Trip to Kenya has had a life changing impact upon our family. Each individual member of our family would rank it is as the best trip of their life. Going into these things one never quite knows what to expect. In fact our youngest son was a puddle of tears and sadness upon departure because he wanted to stay longer. As with all YPO sponsored trips, the staff, the food, the wine was all spectacular through the entire process. The real surprise is that we never would have imagined that our boys would leave Africa with plans on how they are going to change the world, and that is exactly what has happened. We made connections with other YPO’ers worldwide that one could only have by physically building a school together or by walking into a remote area and being warmly welcomed by an entire village filled with song, dance, and gratitude. How many places in life can a 12-year old boy go on a morning jog with a Massai warrior alongside running zebras? Now the conversation that is happening within our family is not only about philanthropy, but about philanthropy that carries a substantial impact upon generations of people. That is what we owe the trip. We give it a 12 on a scale of 1-10!
