MY DAD: MY REAL-LIFE SUPERHERO Celebrating a Father’s Powerful Unconditional Love for His Children
Fathers are like real, living, breathing superheroes — my dad sure is. When I think about my dad, many things come to mind, but one always stands out. While my dad was in the Navy, we were living in Charleston, South Carolina. A fairly common family activity for us was to head down to Myrtle Beach and have some fun in the sun, enjoying the sand, waves, and being together as a family. One day when we arrived at the beach, we noticed that the riptide flags and signs were up, warning anyone wanting to go into the water to swim at their own risk. I don’t necessarily understand exactly how rip currents work or what causes them, but one thing I do know is that they can be extremely dangerous. My mom and dad warned my sister and I to stay close to the shore and not to veer too far out into the water. I was roughly 5 or 6 years old and my sister was about 7 at the time. Of course, we ended up going out a bit too far into the ocean and the current began sweeping us out to sea. My dad saw this happening from the shore and sprang into action. He quickly dove into the water and swam out to us. Once he reached us, he grabbed us both. I held onto his neck as he held onto my sister, and he began swimming against the rip current. It took quite some time to get us back to safety as it was extremely difficult and draining. He was able to get us to the side of the ocean with big boulders to set us on so we could make our way to the beach. From there, he swam the rest of the way back with the little energy he had left. He had cut his leg on the boulders as the waves pushed us up against them, but he didn’t mind — he saved our lives. “I don’t think I quite appreciated the memory or the story of the rip current my dad saved me from until I had kids of my own.”
From this scary moment on, I always knew dad loved me — if he didn’t, he would have just let me be swept out to sea. But all jokes aside, throughout my entire upbringing, he was very quick to tell me he loved me, no matter how old I was. To this day, he still reminds me.
My dad and I at Yellowstone
Not every story or every moment in life is going to be as dramatic as my dad swimming out to save me from the ocean pulling me to my death, but there are always opportunities to show your kids that you love them and my dad has always capitalized on those. This Father’s Day, I want to make sure he knows that I love him too. He’s my superhero! I don’t think I quite appreciated the memory or the story of the rip current my dad saved me from until I had kids of my own. The love for your children is unconditional and unmeasurable! Switching gears and wrapping up, I’d like to announce that if anyone is interested, my brother and I will be playing at Homestead in Meridian, Idaho, on June 10 and at Lakeview Golf Club in Meridian, Idaho, on June 24! I hope to see you out there! I always love seeing your faces in the crowd!
To all dads out there, happy Father’s Day! Enjoy your day!

How to Identify Gum Disease This Can Be a Mouthful
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is an infection within your gums, the tissue that surrounds and helps to hold your teeth in place. Bacteria, mucus, and food particles tend to hang out in our mouths, leaving behind plaque, a sticky and colorless substance, on our teeth. If plaque hardens, it can leave behind an even stronger substance, known as tartar, which can only be removed via professional cleanings. This bacteria, plaque, and tartar can all cause an infection within your gums. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly 47% of adults 30 years of age and older have some form of gum disease. Gum disease typically goes undetected because pain is not a common symptom. However, here are some signs that may indicate gum disease:
• Loose permanent teeth
• A difference in the way your teeth fit together when you bite • A difference in way partial dentures fit in your mouth
Smoking, chewing tobacco, genetics, poor oral hygiene, diabetes, pregnancy, and crooked teeth that may be difficult to floss and brush, and certain medications that dry out your mouth all have the potential to increase your risk of developing periodontal disease. Remember, when it comes to any problems in your mouth, the sooner you get to your dentist’s office to treat it, the better. If you’ve noticed you are experiencing any of the common symptoms of gum disease or if you’re overdue for a cleaning, give us a call today!

SWEET AND SPICY BBQ CHICKEN SKEWERS
Inspired by RecipeRunner.com
Ingredients
Out-of-town relatives who are visiting for the holidays might wonder what makes Emmett so special. But we already know the Treasure Valley is full of gems — and we don’t just mean the rocks. Here are some additional reasons Emmett and The Gem State are great. WE’VE GOT SUNSHINE On average, we have 210 sunny days per year. Compare that to 144 rainy days in Portland and we can feel pretty happy about all our free vitamin D. Directions For the Marinade • 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 tbsp soy sauce • 2 tbsp chili garlic sauce • 2 tbsp rice vinegar • 3 tbsp honey • Juice of 1 lime
• 3/4 tsp smoked paprika • 1/2 tsp salt For the Skewers • 2 lbs chicken breast, cut into bite-size cubes • 1 small pineapple, cut into 1-inch cubes
MOUNTAIN RANGES Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, we don’t have to go far to find mountaintop winter activities. If skiing or tubing is your idea of winter fun, Bogus Basin is just a short drive away, and heading to McCall makes a fun weekend getaway. ... AND RIVERS Not only are we surrounded by the Payette and Boise rivers, Idaho is also home to the deepest gorge in North America: Hells Canyon. Take that, Arizona!
GOOD CHEER Beer lovers, rejoice! Idaho is the world’s largest hop producer, and more and more people are taking advantage of our agricultural bounty by opening breweries in the Treasure Valley. Share a few of these treasures with visiting family members and their only question will be “How did we not come here sooner?”
1. In a bowl, whisk together marinade ingredients. 2. In a reusable freezer bag, combine cubed chicken and all but 1/4 cup of the marinade. 3. Seal bag and massage marinade into the chicken. Chill in the fridge overnight.
4. The following day, preheat the grill to 400 F. Thread chicken and pineapple onto skewers, adding two cubes of chicken for each cube of pineapple. 5. Grill the skewers for 3–4 minutes per side, brushing with the reserved marinade in the final minutes. 6. Serve over rice or with your favorite barbecue sides!

Fun Fact About Bats Facts Bats can be found pretty much everywhere all over the world, and there are over 1,400 species of them! Bats can flap their wings and fly through the air, typically at dusk or during the night as they are nocturnal mammals. A bat's forelimbs, which resemble a modified human hand, are stretched out into wings, which are covered with a very thin layer of skin-like membrane called patagium, which makes flight possible for them.
Soda is delicious and refreshing, but it can wreak havoc on your teeth if you’re not careful! In fact, the consequences of frequently drinking soda can be tough to swallow! The University of Michigan compiled data and found that adults who consume three or more sodas in a day have up to 65% more decayed teeth than those who drink less. When the sugars within soda come into contact with the bacteria that lives inside your mouth, an acid is formed. This acid then attacks your teeth. So, if you were to sip on soda nonstop all day long, your teeth would be constantly under attack! Soda Is the Silent Tooth Attacker
