WP Annual Report SEP25

Our stories Stand-alone Power Systems Over the past year Western Power has refined its innovative Stand-alone Power Systems (SPS) program to improve customer benefit ahead of more units being deployed across the network. As an Australian leader in the roll-out and conversion of overhead power lines to SPS, we are continually seeking and listening to customer and industry feedback to ensure our SPS units meet customer needs. To date 321 SPS units have been commissioned. Each SPS is a grid-independent, energy-generating system that consists of photovoltaic (PV) panels, battery storage, an inverter/s and backup generator. Volumes delivered in FY25 are the highest deployed in any year previous indicating the increased maturity of the program. SPS have redefined the way we deliver power to rural and remote customers, allowing us to remove 695km of overhead powerlines and 3199 power poles, providing those areas with more reliable and safer power, while bringing more renewables onto the grid helping deliver a lower carbon energy future. Installing AMI ahead of SPS deployment has provided us with more energy data, helping us understand individual customer seasonal and daily energy patterns providing greater certainly around system sizing. We also validate sizing information during a site scoping inspection which is done closer to the date of construction for future customers in our installation journey. The cost of maintenance remains a challenge for the program, with changes made to the frequency of routine maintenance and localising refuelling and vegetation works. The customer and community benefits from SPS are positive, with 73% of customers experiencing better reliability, with 20% experiencing no change. Overall SPS has a 70% overall positive impact in our customers’ everyday life.
