FALL 2023

DID YOU HAVE A NICE TRIP?

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU THIS FALL!

Time continues to march on. What it’s now, September? Wasn’t it just the Fourth of July? Time waits for no man, and the Fall Season is here. Global warming showed itself here in the Big Apple. There were a couple of very hot days, and don’t forget our friend M. Humidity — he makes all the difference. Thomas Edison may be long dead, but his ancestors are still partying, even if it’s not 1999. Now the temperature will begin to drop, and being in New York City is kind of cool. When temperatures hit the 70s and the humidity goes bye-bye, going out for a walk or eating outside in the evening can be very pleasant. Now is the time to get out and about before M. Winter arrives. Last year winter was temperate, and if memory serves, we had very little snow. As in snow, snow go away, go and play in New Jersey today and tomorrow. Once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker, even with a 23-year diversion to LA. I went to a few Broadway Shows this summer, even though I haven’t gone to anything in years, and saw “Peter Pan Goes Wrong” and “Grey House” both on the final night of their performances on Broadway. As a bonus at the end of the show, you get a farewell to Broadway speech by the cast. I learned one thing I had forgotten. When they built those theaters, people were a lot shorter. So, when I purchased tickets for “Sweeney Todd,” at approximately three hours, I took an aisle seat with my feet sticking out into the aisle. Woe to anyone trying to move up during the show. Going to the movies, there’s not much there, and I only go to the IMAX AMC theatre in Lincoln Center if something special is happening. My last venture was to see Tom Terrific in “Top Gun: Maverick.” I know “Barbenheimer” is happening, but for the “Heimer” part, I’ve read the source book “American Prometheus,” and at three hours

without intermission, “Oppenheimer” seems a bit too long. However, when “Barbie” comes to streaming, I’m there. After buying my daughter 20 Barbies and only one Ken, since no one cares about Ken, I want to see what all the hoopla is about. It seems many of my patients went to Europe during the summer. My wife and I tend to go to Europe over Thanksgiving weekend. The place is fully open, and most of us stay home to celebrate the holiday. So, the airfares and hotels are generally reasonably priced and everything is empty. What more could you hope for? Now in August is the time to plan your holiday excursions. The holidays will be here before you know it. So, to get the best prices and availabilities, you need to act now. Some of you have not been back to the practice in 2023. Your dental insurance carriers appreciate your efforts. You’re paying for it, so now’s the time to use it. Your teeth and the person in front of you will appreciate your efforts. Even though it’s dentistry, sticking it to the insurance company should bring a smile to your face. Don’t forget your iPhone, if that’s even possible and we can relive some of your traveling adventures even if you decided on a staycation. Just like the movie theaters use to say: “Come On In, It’s Cool Inside.” We are fully air-conditioned, so if it remains warm for some time, you’ll still be cool — and healthy and happy teeth are way cool!

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

Glenn Reit, DDS

ARE YOU GOING TO THE GAME?

With the coming of fall and the temperatures beginning to drop, going out is more comfortable.

reasonable prices. Why would you want to see a losing team? Well, it’s something to do and the arenas will not be crowded.

If you’re a sports fan, now is the time to get out and about to see a game in person. With the Mets and Yankees collapsing, there will be plenty of tickets available at

Of course, hope seems eternal with the start of the football season. Will the Jets and Giants succeed? Let’s see, the Jets were in Super Bowl III … wasn’t that like 50 years ago? The Giants have fared better, but what do you think? Never say never — there’s always hope — but one thing is certain: There will be plenty of seats for either at Met Life Stadium at this point of the season. Something tells me here the seats will still command a premium. If you go to a game, you need to get decent seats. You don’t want to be sitting as if you’re like a plane landing at Kennedy or LaGuardia. Yes, there’s more room up there, but at that height, better to watch the game on TV. Be prepared to be gouged on the food and drinks, but that is part of the experience. Going to a game brings out the fact that you’re a real New Yorker, which is necessary at times. As an alternative, you can go to Central Park for a stroll, run, bicycle ride, or boat ride. There are even swings if you want to relive your childhood. A good swinging always elevates your mood. Don’t forget the carousel, especially if you grew up here. It always brings back memories.

YOUR BEST FRIENDS ARE THE BOOKS YOU READ

Not a lot at the movies or on TV, but there’s always a secret friend waiting. A good book is that friend. Reading is the most intimate relationship between two strangers. Reading can transport you to the past, present, and future. It is entertainment of the mind, somewhat like what radio shows used to be. I always try to read for an hour each day, generally at night before going to sleep. Reading engages your mind and helps keep it active, somewhat like solving puzzles. Here are several titles I’ve recently read; maybe they might be of interest to you.

Nordic noir with Detective Walllander on the hunt. Berlin 1939 — a serial killer is afoot with the Nazis all about. Shipwreck, savagery, and survival in the 1740s on HMS Wager. The definitive biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Are you brave enough to walk the path to the Pet Sematary?

“ FACELESS KILLERS” by Henning Mankell

“BLACKOUT” by Simon Scarrow

“ THE WAGER” by David Grann

“AMERICAN PROMETHEUS” by Kai Bird

“PET SEMATARY” by Stephen King

YOU LEAD WITH YOUR SMILE When you go out and about, don’t you want to look your best? When you look your best, your self-esteem increases, causing you to be more confident. When people look at you many times, they don’t look into your eyes but maybe your forehead or off to the side. Most of us were not born with straight teeth. Some of us had our teeth aligned when younger but, like a salmon, over time, they have reverted back to an earlier state of disorientation while others may never have a beautiful smile.

Think I’m wrong? Quickly, what’s the color of your mom’s or dad’s eyes? Even worse, what’s the color of your mate’s eyes? See what I mean? Generally, people don’t notice your teeth unless they are uneven. Then, they’ll notice and wonder that although you put yourself together fine, you missed out on the obvious. Yes, your front upper and lower teeth. Posterior teeth are in the cave so are generally not seen. All life interactions are some form of selling, so looking good, including having good-looking teeth, can only make it easier to get what you want.

Today, right here in our office, we can reposition your teeth invisibly with clear aligner therapy. You may have heard of it — it’s called Invisalign. No one will know except you and me. The time goes by quickly, and once started, it’s a five-minute appointment every six weeks, and very quickly, your new pleasing smile will appear. Since you pay over time, it’s affordable for all of you in my practice. You’re never too old to start, and if you’re above ground, it’s always a great day, and if you don’t think so, just try missing one of them. We

all have special occasions where you’ll be the center of attention. Pictures are a self-reality check, and with a full attractive aligned smile, you’re going to feel a whole lot better — quickly, affordably, and painlessly with no dental injections or drilling involved. If this is something you want to explore, let me know next time you’re in. You, your teeth, and those you interact with will be glad you did.

UP AND DOWN AGAIN

With the completion of the Q subway line and the pandemic over, something is definitely happening here on the Upper East Side. What’s that, you say — well, there are multiple ongoing construction sites. Our area is soon going to get a lot more crowded. Or maybe not if the buyers are all offshore and just looking to purchase a piece of Manhattan. Let’s see how good you are at knowing you’re in the Upper East Side. Are you looking up, or as most New Yorkers do, are you looking down and stepping lively?

Here’s a helpful hint: All photos are from 72nd to 86th Street between First and Lexington avenues.

H AND H BAGELS – be careful.

BREADS BAKERY – new to town – best baguettes.

ORWASHER’S – been around forever.
