Labor Day is a unique celebration that holds a dear place in my heart. For me, it’s not just about recognizing the importance of work but also about pausing to enjoy and appreciate the fruits of our labor. As I reflect on this special day, my thoughts go back to my parents and grandparents as well as Hillary’s parents and grandparents. One unifying quality among them was their determined work ethic. We are fortunate to have such inspiring examples that taught us the value of working hard and doing things the right way. Hillary and I are personal injury lawyers. Our work enables us to provide for ourselves and our families, but it’s more than that. It helps us fulfill our purpose in life. Every day, we get to represent clients who have suffered physical pain and the toll of medical errors. It’s a calling that I can’t imagine living without. I’m reminded of my father, who suffered a spinal injury at 41 that resulted in paralysis from the neck down. The world may have seen a broken man, but I saw a hero. Despite everything taken away from him because of his injury, he faced the challenges of his new situation with a determination I had never seen before. It was his desire to get back to work that motivated him. He returned to his job representing people going through the difficulty of divorce and custody. His purpose was restored, and it was crucial for him to adapt to his new reality. I feel blessed beyond words that I get to go to work every day doing something I love with amazing and talented coworkers. My father’s resilience and determination resonate with me in my daily life, and they have shaped my outlook on work. I know that our clients, who come to us in pain and distress, need that same resilience and determination. We’re here to help them find it. LABOR DAY CELEBRATES MORE THAN WORK DETERMINATION AND RESILIENCE

My father, John J. Rinehardt, presenting to a group of lawyers

Labor Day serves as a reminder of all this and more. It’s a moment to honor the toil and achievements of people who strive every day. It’s a day to celebrate not just the economic and social achievements of workers but the human spirit that drives us all. It’s a chance to step back from our busy lives and savor what we’ve worked so hard to build. I wish everyone the joy and fulfillment that I’ve found in my work. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to feel passionate about their work and find meaning in it, just as I have. On this Labor Day, let us all celebrate our determination, our resilience, our love for what we do, and our ability to find purpose in our work. Let’s take a moment to enjoy the company of our loved ones, reflect on our journey, and appreciate everything that our labor has brought us. It’s a celebration not just of a job well done, but of a life well lived.

CORN AND TOMATO RISOTTO

September marks the tail end of corn and tomato season. Hillary has been making this recipe since she found it in a House & Garden magazine in 1997. It tastes like summer but is also great comfort food for fall. Delicious! INGREDIENTS Tomato Concasse • 2 shallots, diced • 1 garlic clove, chopped • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 lbs ripe tomatoes, peeled (drop in boiling water for 30 seconds and the peel will come off easily) • 1/2 cup white wine Risotto • 6–8 cups chicken broth or stock • 1/4 cup chopped shallot • 3 tbsp olive oil • 1 1/2 cups Arborio rice • 3 ears of corn (peel and cut kernels off cob) • 1/4 cup heavy cream • Handful of herbs, chopped • Salt and pepper

Cesar Chavez: Champion of Empowerment Cesar Chavez, a prominent labor leader and civil rights activist, demonstrated the power of empowering others. As the co- founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW), Chavez advocated for fair wages and better working conditions for farm laborers. His commitment to nonviolent protest and community mobilization showcased the strength of collective action. One of his key leadership lessons is the importance of empowering your team, fostering a sense of unity, and advocating for justice.

Mary Harris ‘Mother’ Jones: Fearless Advocacy Known as “Mother” Jones, Mary Harris was a fiery labor and community organizer. She fearlessly championed the rights of workers, particularly child laborers, and played a pivotal role in the labor movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her leadership lesson lies in her unwavering determination to stand up for those who couldn’t speak for themselves. Leaders today can learn from her courage to address difficult issues, amplify marginalized voices, and advocate for positive change.

Eleanor Roosevelt: Compassionate Leadership Eleanor Roosevelt, the former First Lady and human rights advocate, exemplified compassionate leadership. Her dedication to social justice, civil rights, and women’s rights showcased the impact of using one’s platform to uplift marginalized communities. Her leadership lesson centers on the importance of empathy, active listening, and using your influence to create a more equitable and inclusive world.

DIRECTIONS

1. Make the concasse: In a large skillet, sauté the shallots and garlic in the olive oil for several minutes until softened. Add the tomatoes and white wine. Simmer for 15 minutes. 2. Make the risotto: Put chicken stock in a pot and bring to a simmer. In a separate 2-quart sauté pan, cook shallots over medium heat. Add rice and stir. Add 1 cup stock, stirring until absorbed. Continue adding about a cup of broth at a time and stirring until the rice is tender, 20–25 minutes. 3. Reduce heat, add 1/2 cup tomato concasse, corn kernels, cream, and 1/4 cup herbs. Add salt and pepper. Cook until corn is heated through. 4. Reheat remaining concasse. 5. Serve risotto with concasse on top and sprinkled with herbs.

Steve Jobs: Innovative Vision Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Inc., was a visionary leader who revolutionized technology and design. His relentless pursuit of innovation and perfection transformed industries and created products that shaped modern life. His leadership lesson revolves around embracing innovation, thinking outside the box, and fostering a culture that encourages bold ideas and calculated risks.

Dolores Huerta: Persistence and Perseverance Dolores Huerta, another UFW co-founder and labor activist, showcased the power of persistence and perseverance. Her work in advocating for farm workers’ rights spanned decades, demonstrating the impact of long-term commitment to a cause. Corn and Tomato Risotto 4 The Art of Work-Life Balance

The Art of Work-Life Balance: Thriving in Both Arenas

In today’s fast-paced world, finding the perfect equilibrium between work and personal life can be challenging. We often find ourselves engrossed in our professional endeavors, striving to achieve our goals and climb the corporate ladder. However, it’s crucial to remember that a well-rounded life encompasses more than just career success. The concept of work-life balance is not about dividing our time equally; it’s about dedicating quality time to both our professional pursuits and personal well-being. The Significance of Work-Life Balance Work-life balance goes beyond being a simple buzzword — it’s vital to our overall health and well-being. While career achievements are undoubtedly important, they shouldn’t come at the cost of our mental, emotional, and physical health. Neglecting personal time can lead to burnout, stress, and strained relationships, ultimately affecting our productivity and happiness in the long run. Tips for Achieving a Healthy Work-Life Balance • Set Clear Boundaries: Create clear boundaries between work and personal time. Designate specific hours for work and commit to unplugging when the workday is done. This helps prevent the constant intrusion of work into your personal life.

• Prioritize Self-Care: Just as you allocate time for work tasks, allocate time for self-care activities. Whether it’s exercising, meditating, reading, or spending quality time with loved ones, make self-care a nonnegotiable part of your routine. • Learn to Say No: While taking on new projects and tasks can be rewarding, overcommitting can lead to stress and exhaustion. Learn to say no to additional work when your plate is already full. • Focus on Efficiency: Maximize your productivity during work hours to free up time for other activities. Set specific goals for each workday and strive to accomplish them efficiently, allowing you to wrap up tasks sooner. • Embrace Flexibility: If your job allows it, explore flexible work arrangements, such as remote work or flexible hours. This can provide more control over your schedule and reduce the time spent commuting.

• Delegate and Collaborate: Don’t hesitate to delegate tasks to

colleagues and collaborate on projects. Sharing responsibilities can ease your workload and create opportunities for skill development in your team.
