Modern Foreign Languages Staff present: Miss Mercer, Mrs Gaine, Mrs Clarke and Miss Leman

Rooms: 2-20 and 2-21

Studying MFL equips all students with a toolkit of skills for life, with literacy being an important strand of learning within languages. At Bitterne Park School ALL students are given the opportunity to study either French or Spanish at Key Stage 3. Both languages are offered at GCSE level. In most cases students continue with the language that they have studied at Key Stage 3, however there is the option to study a language from beginner level. Students have the opportunity to continue to study languages at BPS beyond GCSEs too, in our Sixth Form, where both French and Spanish are offered. The MFL team aspire to develop confident linguists who enjoy and succeed in their language learning and become international citizens who are equipped to succeed in an ever-changing global society. We strive to foster students’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of diverse cultures around the world. Our teaching enables ALL students to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.

The topics at Key Stage 3 are Identity & Relationships, Achievement & Choices, Free Time & Enjoyment, Meal Times & Global Cuisine, Travel & Respect, Health & Happiness. These foundations will allow for a smooth transition to Key Stage 4 and beyond where all topics will be revisited and developed.
