Music is a popular subject across all key stages at Bitterne Park School, both in and outside of the curriculum. The learning journey begins in Year 7 with basic rhythms, scales and harmonies encouraging the use of polyrhythms on the drums, the use of our voices to explore melodies and primary chords on keyboards. The journey continues in Year 8 using more complex rhythms, the exploration of Blues melodies based around the Blues scale as well as how Music Technology is used to combine and enhance compositional ideas. Students learn how Music has evolved through time from the 1600s to the present day. For some, their music education continues into Year 9. We learn how music is applied in various contexts and locations such as in the Pop Industry as well as the use of music in Film and TV. Our lessons are mostly practical, and pupils are encouraged to bring in their own instruments where appropriate. In Years 10 and 11, we teach both GCSE Music and BTEC Music; all prior knowledge and skills come together at this point no matter which route pupils choose to continue with. These KS4 courses prepare pupils to further their music education into KS5, where we also offer a variety of Music- based qualifications.
