CCNE Continuous Improvement Progress Report (2018 Standards ), Standard IV
Baccalaureate Education for Nurses and other competencies integrated throughout the program based on national and professional guidelines. These indicate whether the students are at the level of the baccalaureate generalist nurse. Students’ mastery of program student learning outcomes indicates the effectiveness of the program to prepare the student for their role as a baccalaureate generalist nurse. Students’ inability to master the program student learning outcomes may indicate areas in the curriculum or teaching-learning practices in need of improvement or additions required. We continue to assess student competence in the program outcomes not only throughout the program by linking these outcomes to all course outcomes, but also during the final capstone practicum experience and course. At this time all students in the RN-BSN program have been successful in meeting the program outcomes. The program outcomes were recently reviewed by the Curriculum Committee and faculty to align them to the new Domains.
IV-J 2. Describe the process in place to analyze program changes for effectiveness:
Depending on what is being changed it may go to the Outcomes Committee or the Curriculum Committee. The information from these committees is then taken to faculty meetings for further review and discussion. Information on program changes is also shared with the advisory board. When Sumner College was determining the need for a generic BSN program students and community members were surveyed and asked for input at advisory board meetings. A workforce Need Survey was distributed to 40 clinical partners prior to opening the RN-BSN. Several responses showed that institutions either required a bachelor’s degree in nursing or it was preferred at the time of employment. Several institutions provided incentives for their nurses to attain a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Respondents also noted that areas they felt were valuable to include in the curriculum included ethics, statistics, nursing research, intercultural communications, healthcare informatics, patient safety and continuous quality improvement, organizational and systems leadership, community and global health nursing, holistic health assessment and health promotion, and pathophysiology. All of these courses and topics are included in the BSN programs. In July 2021 another survey was sent out to clinical partners focusing on the proposed generic BSN program. Thirty-four practice cites participated in this survey. Responses included 65.65% of sites stated that the bachelor’s degree in nursing was the preferred credential for employment with their company. Ninety-seven percent responded that they would explore partnering with Sumner College to provide clinical opportunities for BSN students. One respondent wrote, “BSN is a future for most healthcare facilities.” To provide another avenue for clinical partners to provide input is through the Advisory board. The proposed BSN program was introduced to the advisory board on July 28, 2021, and again discussed on March 30, 2022. The board members reviewed the mission, goals, outcomes, and curriculum. The comments were positive. One member appreciated the inclusion of policy and regulation. Another felt it was solid and thorough.
