HUM102 CULTURE AND THE ARTS
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces nursing students to the personal and social aspects of visual art through lectures, slide shows, and individual practice. It explores art as an expression of individual and cultural identity, and as social criticism. Students directly investigate these concepts by producing original artwork focusing on specific visual ideas such as color, realism, symbolism, self- portraits, etc. Students also discuss the role of art within nursing care and in their own lives.
COURSE CREDIT HOURS: 2.0 Quarter Credits

COURSE PREREQUISITES: None
DELIVERY METHOD: Full distance
INSTRUCTION METHOD: Threaded discussions, lessons, quizzes, examinations, and assignments.
OUTSIDE HOURS & WORK: Consistent with 34 CFR 600.2 and Sumner College Policy and Procedure, students are expected to spend approximately two hours of time on homework each week for every, one hour of direct classroom instruction.

COURSE OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Produce creative works that demonstrate innovation in concept and materials. 2. Identify expressions of culture and ethnic identity in art. 3. Describe the wide array of forms, materials, methods that art can take, from traditional and historical practices to contemporary and innovative expressions. 4. Identify the ways art is used as emotional expression, including in self-portraits. 5. Discuss ethical issues in art and the role of art as social criticism. 6. Describe the role of pattern, perspective, light, color, line, and symbolism in art composition. 7. List commonalities between the disciplines of art and nursing and discuss using art in the health care setting.
