HOW TO NAVIGATE BUSES AND SCHOOL ZONES WITH CARE Back-to-School Safety:
SCHOOL ZONE SAFETY School zones require extra caution due to the increased pedestrian traffic and potential congestion in and around them. Obey speed limits. Most school zones have reduced speed limits during specific hours when students arrive at and depart from school. Adhering to these limits ensures you have enough time to react to unexpected dangerous situations. Remember, no passing. Passing other vehicles in school zones is generally prohibited. This rule helps maintain a controlled and safe environment for children near schools and school buses. Yield and obey crossguards. Be sure to always yield the right-of-way to pedestrians at crosswalks and respect the direction of school crossing guards — they have everyone’s safety in mind! As responsible members of the community, it’s our duty to make sure our kids are safe going to and from school every day. Happy back-to- school season!
As the new school year approaches, it’s essential to refresh your understanding of bus and school zone safety. With an influx of students and increased traffic around schools, taking extra precautions is paramount to ensure the safety of all young kids, pedestrians, and drivers. BUS SAFETY When it comes to school buses, there are specific rules and guidelines to follow to keep everyone safe. Stop for school buses. If a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing and the stop arm extended, all vehicles moving in both directions must come to a complete stop to allow students to get on or off the bus safely. Maintain a safe distance. Be sure to keep a proper following distance (about 3–4 car lengths) behind any school bus to allow for ample time to stop if the bus suddenly halts or turns. Stay alert. Children may not be paying attention or understand the rules of the road and crosswalk when they are crossing the road near school bus loading zones. Stay vigilant and watch for any signs of activity near bus stops.
