CENTENNIAL BEACH Profile
The Aquatics division of the Recreation Department is responsible for the overall operations associated with the Centennial Beach aquatics facility. The Beach is supervised by one full-time Aquatics Manager who is assisted by numerous seasonal staff in the positions of managers, lifeguards, customer service representatives, swim lessons instructors, and swim team coaches. The Aquatics Manager is responsible for supervising Beach operations as well as managing the District’s indoor aquatics program offerings, Centennial Grill, the Paddleboat Quarry Rentals operations, and tours of the Millennium Carillon. Centennial Beach, originally developed in the early 1930s, is home to Naperville’s largest outdoor aquatics facility. Once a stone quarry, the “Beach”, which holds 6.2 million gallons of water, is a unique summer swimming destination for the community and surrounding areas. The budget for memberships and daily admissions was developed using a three-year average. The facility operates Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Membership sales were slightly below budgeted revenue by 5% or $12,905; however, daily admissions exceeded budget by 14.6% or $117,780. Overall attendance ended the year up by 11% compared to the three- year average.
Centennial Beach expenses are projected at 3.0% or $31,455 under budget due in large part to administrative oversight of lifeguard schedules and the control of overtime expenses. The surplus for the facility is projected to exceed budget by 31% or $116,590. Overall, the aquatics programming at Centennial Beach experienced steady participation this past summer in swim lessons, swim team, and water aerobics. Participation numbers in 2024 were 935 compared to 955 in 2023 for swim lessons. The water fitness class for both sessions had steady participation numbers with 6 more participants registered than in 2023. The Paddleboard Yoga program experienced steady participation with 2 fewer participants overall than in 2023. The Mudrats swim team participation declined in participation in 2024 with 18 fewer participants down from 129 in 2023. Safety continues to be a top priority at Centennial Beach. The lifeguards scored an “Exceeds” on all three of this year’s lifeguarding audits, which is the highest possible score. The recruitment of lifeguards will continue to be a top priority during the off-season. Lifeguard positions will be posted in November and all returning lifeguard staff will be reevaluated for a determination of rehiring. New in 2025, beach management staff will be starting a staff leadership program targeted at developing leaders within the lifeguard and guest services departments to better serve their peers.
The 2025 budget includes staff wage increases of $1 per hour, which is a result of minimum wage increases and the need to recruit and retain staff required to operate the facility. To offset the rising wages, a 5% increase on non-resident memberships in addition to a daily fee rate adjustment of $1 for non-residents is planned. There are no scheduled fee increase to residents for memberships or daily admission. With these fee increases, Centennial Beach is budgeted to achieve a surplus of $372,000 in 2025.
