The History Behind Christmas Lights

dental treatment cannot be performed by just a single person. As a team we have incorporated the “Mastermind Principle” of joining multiple minds together in perfect harmony thereby producing exponential outcomes. In other words meaning one plus one does not equal two but three or four. I try to be open to change and the staff has helped me to see the light when I am stuck in the darkness. A big thank you to: Michele, Lindsey, Elvina, Carol, Tina, Renata, Ben, Candice, Dan and Joshua for all your efforts. I am also grateful to you our patients for allowing us to treat your dental needs. Throughout the year many of you have shared with me your happy moments from getting married, having a baby, securing a new job and your worldwide travels. I have also learned of the challenges some of you are facing and your strengths in powering through them.

At Year’s end its time to reflect on what did and didn’t happen during the past year. In New York City with our hectic lifestyle we sometimes lose focus on what really matters. I believe your health and family are most important. Our dental practice would not exist without the staff. You may be scheduling to see me but that wouldn’t be possible without the support of our dental staff team members. Fortunately they have been with me for many years. I could not manage the practice without them. From the front desk/ reception, clinical staff, specialists and marketing personnel they all contribute to running the practice and maintaining my sanity. I am a big advocate of practice culture and believe to build great things you need a connected team. We celebrate our wins and proactively push through challenges together. Dentistry is a team effort and

For most of us coming to the dentist is not a favorable adventure, but we are always happy to see you and strive to create a positive and relaxing experience. We take pride in the work we provide and want you to have a healthy and beautiful smile. With 2019 rapidly coming to an end you should plan for 2020. One way I plan is through the use of a journal. Whether you write your thoughts old school in an actual journal or new wave on your phone or machine the act of writing brings clarity to your thoughts and helps achieve your plans. You have to know your destination if you have any hope of arriving. Wishing you continued health, happiness and peace of mind in the new decade. Can you believe Y2K was twenty years ago? Time id definitely moving quickly; best to make the most of it.

I look forward to seeing you in the new year!

LIGHT UP THE NIGHT

Why Do We Hang Christmas Lights?

Johnson continued this tradition, increasing the number of lights each year and eventually putting them up outside. But because electricity was still a new concept, many years passed before the fad took off for regular Americans. In 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the tradition of lighting the National Christmas Tree, which spurred the idea of selling stringed lights commercially. By the 1930s, families everywhere were buying boxes of bulbs by the dozen. Today, an estimated 150 million Christmas lights are sold in America each year, decorating 80 million homes and consuming 6% of the nation’s electricity every December. Whether you’ll be putting up your own lights or appreciating the most impressive light displays in your neighborhood or town, let the glow fill you with joy this season. Just don’t leave them up until February!

The first string of twinkling lights illuminating your neighbor’s house is always a telltale sign of the upcoming seasonal festivities. Christmas lights are a holiday staple, but have you ever wondered where this beloved tradition started? The tradition of hanging lights on the tree originally started with candles. Because this posed an immense fire hazard, Edward Hibberd Johnson, a close friend of Thomas Edison and vice president of the Edison Electric Light Company, vowed to find a better way to decorate Christmas trees with light. In December 1882, three years after Edison’s invention of the lightbulb in November 1879, Johnson hand- wired 80 red, white, and blue lightbulbs together and wound them around a Christmas tree in his parlor window. A passing reporter saw the spectacle and declared in the Detroit Post and Tribune, “One can hardly imagine anything prettier.”

YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Having a healthy mouth is good for you and a beautiful smile makes for a more youthful appearance and contributes to your overall health. We want you to look and feel better especially after being with us. A strengthened immune system allows you to more fully enjoy life.

So what are you to do? You need to do something. You can’t change your genetic makeup. You are what you are. However, your first line of defense is a healthy lifestyle including a diet high in fruit and vegetables, regular exercise, a healthy weight, adequate sleep, moderate alcohol intake, no smoking and a reduction of stress. Meditation helps here.

When you think about it your most important friend is your immune system. Your immune system is a defense system of cells, tissues and organs which protect you from disease. Evolution has taken millions of years but in the past century the industrial revolution has changed the environment. Our air and water supply are no longer as pristine as they once were. Here in the city our cars release copious amounts of carbon monoxide, there is waste runoff into the rivers, microwave towers surround us and then there is constant noise. All of these external pressures tax your immune system whether you believe it or not. You know the problem is real when more hospital complexes are being built here in the city and on television there seems to be an unending cascade of drug commercials. Our evolution has not caught up with our technology. Sure there are more cures but wouldn’t it be better to not need one?

GET UNTANGLED FOR THE HOLIDAYS With 2019’s Hottest Wireless Earbuds

FOR THE TRAVELER: CAMBRIDGE AUDIO’S MELOMANIA 1

With the holiday shopping season right around the corner, we want to catch you up on one of the hottest tech items of 2019: wireless earbuds. Apple’s AirPods may have been one of the first to boast the convenience of no tangled wires or bulky headbands to flatten your hairdo, but this year’s many strong competitors have stepped up to the plate. Use this guide to find the right earbuds for the music lovers in your life. Do you have a loved one who uses words like “warmth,” “range,” and “crispness” when commenting on your home entertainment system? Well, if any pair of headphones is going to live up to their discerning ears, it’s Sennheiser’s elegant first entry into the world of wireless earbuds. With a $300 price tag, they are far from cheap, but Sennheiser has put every cent to good use. Not only do these high-end buds have a sound quality to rival the most expensive wired headphones, but they also make use of the latest Bluetooth technology to deliver tunes with imperceptible latency. FOR THE CONNOISSEUR: SENNHEISER’S MOMENTUM TRUE WIRELESS

At $130, Cambridge Audio’s Melomania 1 model is a competent contender for its price range alone. The headphones deliver the best, most detailed sound quality in their class and boast an impressively stable Bluetooth connection. But what really makes these earbuds a steal is their outrageous battery life. A full charge will give you nine hours of uninterrupted music, which can be extended an extra 36 hours thanks to the Melomania 1’s portable charging case. Thus, these are the ideal headphones for long flights, camping trips, and any other excursion away from power outlets. For those who love blasting a motivating playlist while swinging kettlebells, look no further than the SoundSport Free wireless earbuds. For $200, Bose delivers the balanced sound they’ve built their brand on while adding some sporty features every jogger or lifter will appreciate. Their design makes for a comfortable fit, and earbud-mounted controls mean users don’t have to fish their phones out of their gym shorts. FOR THE GYM RAT: BOSE’S SOUNDSPORT FREE

GREEN BEANS WITH GINGER AND GARLIC

Turkey is, for the most part, a healthy and lean protein. Thanksgiving sides, on the other hand, tend to be a little more indulgent. This year, eschew the classic, creamy green bean casserole in favor of this lighter, healthier, and altogether tastier option.

INGREDIENTS

1/2 tsp ground ginger

2 lbs whole green beans, ends trimmed

1 tsp crushed red pepper

6 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

Kosher salt, to taste

2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced

DIRECTIONS

3. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, 30 seconds. Stir in ground ginger and crushed pepper. Add green beans. 4. Cook together for 2–3 minutes. 5. Transfer to plate and serve.

1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. To the side of the stove, prepare a large bucket of ice water. 2. Cook beans in boiling water for 4 minutes. Immediately transfer to ice water. Drain and pat dry.

DR. REIT’S HOLIDAY FAVORITES

DINOSAUR BARBEQUE – 125TH AT WEST SIDE HIGHWAY

SERAFINA – MADISON AND 79TH

PETER LUGER – BROOKLYN

It hasn’t changed but at this location the Italian food and wine by the glass are always excellent, the linguini with clams and red sauce is one of my favorites. If you like Italian and don’t want to spend a fortune this is a place to try.

We have been going here for decades even when in from L.A. They have been very good and gone out of their way for my family and I. The saying you like, “Going where everyone knows your name” happens here for us.

This place is always rock’n and if you like barbeque this is it. All bets are off as far as healthy eating but the earing is sure good. My buddy Steve has been preparing our holiday catering every year and it’s always great.
