2. Work schedules: Advocate for earlier start times. Working in the cooler morning hours can significantly reduce the risk of heat illness. 3. Take complaints seriously: If you’re an employer, take your team’s complaints about the heat seriously. Prevention of heat-related illnesses should be a priority, not an afterthought. 4. Know your rights: Familiarize yourself with workplace safety standards and your rights as an employee. If you or someone you know has suffered from a heat-related injury at work, legal recourse might be necessary. DER THE SUN OR WORK-RELATED HEAT INJURIES
Amusement parks and pools are quintessential summer destinations, providing roller coaster thrills and a refreshing escape from the heat. However, these fun-filled venues can also pose substantial risks. I’ve seen excitement turn to emergency in moments, emphasizing the need for awareness and proper response to these types of accidents. UNDERSTAND THE RISKS AT PLAY Attractions like roller coasters and water slides are inherently risky. For example, a few years ago, an incident occurred at Western Playland when a ride that my kids and I were riding unexpectedly stopped mid-roller coaster, forcing us to disembark via a ladder. An event like this one reminds us that not everything is as safe as it may seem. That’s why stringent safety regulations must be followed by the park’s staff or property owners. Surprisingly, the average pool can also be dangerous. Did you know that drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury- related death for children ages 1–4? I recently managed a case where a young individual tragically drowned in an apartment complex pool that did not have a permit to operate. These facilities are governed by strict commercial safety standards that, when neglected, can lead to catastrophic outcomes. THE ROLE OF VIGILANCE For parents, vigilance is the first line of defense against potential dangers. A visit to the pool or amusement park often comes with a false sense of security. Just last summer, a drowning at a city park served as a sobering reminder of the lurking risks. Following such incidents, there is often a swift move to attribute blame, with defendants frequently pointing fingers at parents. However, accountability is multifaceted, and understanding the legal framework is essential. LEGAL SUPPORT AND ADVOCACY If you or someone you know has suffered an injury or accident at an amusement park or other public space this summer, seeking expert legal advice is crucial. These organizations and their staff have a legal duty to ensure their premises are safe for all visitors. When this duty is breached, they need to be held accountable. Awareness and preparedness are also vital to ensuring that fun days out remain safe. When you understand the risks, maintain vigilance, and know your legal rights, you can help safeguard your family’s well-being during these exciting but potentially hazardous summer outings.
