2025 APEGA Annual Report

K–12 Outreach It’s never too early to inspire the next generation of engineers and geoscientists. Our primary kindergarten-to-Grade 12 outreach activities are the APEGA Science Olympics and the Rock & Fossil Clinic. At these annual events, our amazing teams of volunteer engineers and geoscientists provide young minds with hands-on, collaborative activities—all of which align with provincial educational learning outcomes—to get them thinking about common challenges faced in the professions. Science Olympics events were held on April 5 in Edmonton and May 24 in Calgary. Students in four divisions were challenged to build a sturdy nest that will stay steady in water for birds that have lost their homes (grades 1–3); a rain harvester that effectively collects rainwater, minimizes runoff, and prevents erosion (grades 4–6); a precision seeding machine (grades 7–9); and a prototype for stabilizing a magnetometer that autonomously detects rare earth minerals (grades 10–12). The Rock & Fossil Clinic on October 4 in Edmonton brought together families, educators, and future geoscientists with professional geoscientists who discussed attendees’ rock samples and explained how ground-penetrating radar lets geoscientists “see” beneath the surface of the Earth.

“When I first attended the Science Olympics as a kid, it felt like the biggest thing in the world. It was so special to be immersed in all things science with all the other eager students. Now, having just received my P.Eng. designation 12 years later, I got to introduce fundamental engineering concepts and ignite the same passion I had with all the students at this year’s Science Olympics.” – Nick Wong, P.Eng., former Science Olympics competitor, now volunteer, and a professional inspiration to future engineers
