APEGA’s election process starts in the summer when the Nominating Committee begins vetting council applicants before they are placed on the ballot. “The volunteers on the Nominating Committee are tasked with identifying candidates who have the appropriate competencies, skills, and attributes to effectively govern APEGA, which is a huge task,” says our council relations manager. Applicants who pass a pre-screen assessment move onto the interview stage, when committee members get to know the people behind the qualifications to assess how their skill sets will align with their potential roles, and to confirm if the candidates demonstrate competencies based on council’s recruitment priorities, which can vary from year to year. It’s the human element behind the election process, “and there’s nothing more human than keeping Albertans safe.” Acclamations and appointments At the annual general meeting, council ratified Dean Mullin, P.Eng., as president-elect, and five councillors were elected, four of them for the first time. Wendy Shier, P.Geo., was re-elected to serve a second term. With only one executive council candidate in the 2025 election, no vice-president was elected, so APEGA Council appointed Jason Vanderzwaag, P.Eng., as vice-president, as per the General Regulation 27(1). Eric Potter, P.Eng., was named councillor for the 2025–2026 term to fill this one-year vacancy. Council Election When it comes to professional and volunteer leadership, members of APEGA Council set the standard.
