Driver’s Licenses, College Roommates, and Another School Year How We’re Preparing for the Back-to-School Season

As August rolls around, it’s back-to-school season again — just like that. I can’t help but get a little nostalgic when I write about this in the newsletter. Every year, it feels like my boys are hitting major milestones in their separate journeys. So, let me share a bit about what’s going on with them and keep our little family tradition of celebrating these yearly academic kick-offs alive.

drivers, my dad instincts can’t help but worry about fender benders. Accidents happen around the school all the time, and it might be a miracle if he comes out of the school year unscathed. I know Nathan will try his hardest because I’ve made it clear that if he gets in an accident, he’s riding the bus to school from then on!

Jokes aside, junior year is pivotal, and for Nathan, it feels like college is just around the corner. Soon, he’ll be following in his big brother’s footsteps. As part of our yearly tradition, we always take a photo on the first day of school, with

Zach, my eldest, is stepping into his sophomore year of college. It’s strange what a difference just one year makes! Last year, he had to overcome a few hurdles when starting college — a new environment, an unknown roommate, and no familiar faces. He faced his freshman year with his usual confidence, and honestly, if anyone was a bundle of nerves, it was me and my wife! But this year, there’s a noticeable shift. He’s heading back with a spring in his

step, excited to room with his friends and reunite with all his college buddies. As parents, we feel a sense of relief too. No matter how capable and independent Zach has always been, we can’t help but worry. But any ounce of uncertainty from his freshman year is long gone. Seeing how quickly he’s adapted and understood the college ropes is incredible. Then there’s Nathan, who’s just starting his junior year in high school. Big steps for him, too — he’s got his driver’s license now and his very own parking spot at school. He’s been driving himself to hockey practices and hanging out with friends, but driving to school daily marks a new level of independence. Of course, with a high school parking lot filled with new teen

It’s exciting to watch them both dive into another year packed with new challenges and opportunities. Zach’s deep into mechanical engineering and participating in theater productions, while Nathan’s gearing up for the upcoming hockey season and getting ready for college applications. Whether it’s moving from freshman to sophomore year in college or stepping into junior year of high school, each phase brings challenges and opportunities. To my fellow parents, I wish you a smooth school year ahead (and zero high school fender benders). –Mike Ulmer

TENSION VS. MIGRAINE HEADACHES How Physical Therapy Can Help Alleviate Your Chronic Headaches

If you’ve ever had a headache, you know how disruptive and painful it can be. But not all headaches are created equal. Tension headaches and migraines, for instance, are significantly different in their causes, symptoms, and treatments. To find relief, you must know what kind of headache you’re dealing with. Understanding these differences is crucial in managing their discomfort and finding long-term relief. TENSION HEADACHES: THE COMMON CULPRIT Tension headaches are usually described as a dull, aching sensation all over the head rather than throbbing pain in one spot. Many people also experience pressure and pain around the temples, and some even feel discomfort down into the neck and shoulders, causing muscle stiffness. The primary causes of tension headaches are typically stress-

related — think long days hunched over a computer or excessive worrying that leads to jaw clenching and poor posture. Simple lifestyle changes, such as improving posture and taking breaks to stretch, can help reduce the frequency of tension headaches. Manual therapy, regular stretching, and neck and upper back exercises are some of the best physical therapy techniques to combat tension headaches. MIGRAINES: MORE THAN JUST A HEADACHE Migraines, on the other hand, are often more intense and debilitating. While you may be able to go on with your day having a tension headache, a migraine is strong enough to have you clear your calendar. Symptoms include nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and a severe throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head. Some people also experience “migraine aura,”
