published under the title of the New Standard Bible. Dr. Feinberg is one of the members of this committee of theologians who have brought the American Standard Version up to date. Another helpful volume has been the Amplified New Testament. Gen erally speaking, however, the King James Version is most adequate. Q . Tucson, A rii. — “ 7 have often won dered about the expression found in Isaiah 66:2b and Mark 9:b8 where it says, ‘the worm dieth not.’ What does this mean?" A. The Lord refers to those who are in danger of punishment, specifically that which is eternal in hell. This does not mean worms in the literal sense. The worm indicates that which keeps boring and boring and is representa tive of conscience or memory. It is the great connecting link between this life and the life which is to come. In hell there will be no cessation of con science or memory. Needless to say, it is a very graphic picture. Q . Eugene, Ore. — ‘‘Please explain the meaning of Matthew 5:22. Why does it talk about ‘hell fire’? Is it to be taken literally?” A. This deals with calling one’s broth er a “fool.” The statement concerning “hell fire” represents the word “gehen- na.” This is a place of constant, con tinual torment. It signifies everlasting punishment and separation from God. Yes, the passages you have mentioned are indeed to be taken literally. The only way of escape and the only de liverance found anywhere in the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is simple faith in the wonderful redeeming work of the Lord Jesus Christ. Q , Nampa, Idaho — "Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? Please explain He brews 13:U. I f young girls know bet ter but get on the wrong track, can’t they be forgiven?” A. We certainly do believe in the Holy Spirit. We believe that there is one God eternally manifested in three per
sons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. These Three are One, the same in sub stance and equal in power and glory. The truth of the Trinity transcends our reason, as that which is infinite transcends that which is merely finite. There are many indications of the personality of the Holy Spirit in the Word of God. One example is Matthew 28:19. Here the Holy Spirit is linked with both Father and Son. The doc trine of the Holy Spirit is one of the most significant truths to be found in the Word of God. In connection with Hebrews 13:4 we find the words, “Marriage is hon ourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.” It is interesting, inciden tally, that this verse refers to men, rather than women. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. We are not saved, nor are we kept saved, by the things that we do or the things that we do not do. We are redeemed by the power of the Lord Jesus Christ through faith in His atoning work on Calvary’s Cross. We are kept saved in this same way. Do not interpret this to mean that we condone such sins as have been suggested by the writer. Yet, if a person goes wrong and honestly confesses his sin, the Bible tells us that God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins (I John 1:9). Q . The Dalle», Ore. — “In Deuteronomy 23:3, it says that a Moabite or an Dr. Charles L Feinberg, dean of the Talbot Thee- logical Seminary, leads the school's chapel service.
