When Margaret Elizabeth Spencer was six years old—separated from her siblings and entering foster care for the third time—she made herself a promise: “When I get big, I will help the children.” Removed from her family multiple times due to instability and her mother’s untreated mental health challenges, Margaret experienced what too many children endure: disrupted routines, fractured relationships, and the absence of a consistent, loving adult. Today, she shares her story with courage and clarity. “It takes a community to raise a child,” she says. “We can do better for the children.” In her honor, her partner, Jeff Vine, rode 3,800 miles across the country—raising awareness and funds for Foster America. Together, they are advancing our prevention-first mission: ensuring families receive support earlier so siblings stay together and fewer children experience the trauma of separation. Their story reminds us that change is possible—and that each of us has a role to play.
