The ADA protects people with physical or mental dis- abilities, and individuals perceived as disabled. Protected categories can include depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, autism, blindness or deafness, cancer, diabetes, and many others. The law may also protect individuals who support disabled family members. “It’s essential for employers to have what’s called ‘inter- active discussions’ with their employees regarding disabil- ities,” said Krugel. “Too often, we see employers arbitrarily claim a proposed accommodation is unreasonable without discussing the matter with the workers and with medical professionals.” Bonus tip: Err on the side of accommodation: Modify the work environment if at all possible.
