Byron Villager October 2024

Here are some of my favourite October Neighbourhood Adventures: Admiring the View Byron boasts many hills, but I love standing at the top of the park at Chalet Cres. and Ironwood Rd. From here, you can look right across the city and catch the full vista of changing leaves of our Forest City! Under the Canopy Any one of our wonderful neigh - bourhood trails would be an awe- some place to spend some time looking up into the colours and crunching through freshly fall- en leaves – such bliss! Warbler Woods is a feast for the senses!! Across the Water The reflection of the trees on the Thames River is also a local highlight for me. If you stand at

Neighbourhood Adventuring: Going with the Flow by Kim Fulton

Autumn is when we prepare for the cooler, darker weeks ahead. There’s a natural momentum as we ready ourselves (pantry, home, closets, etc..) for it. October is just the beginning of this season of preparation. Things are still lively and vibrant, but we can tell that any minute it’s all going to change. We see hints of gold amongst the green leaves and then suddenly everything is awash in bright oranges and fiery reds. We might have snow, but sometimes we have our pools open until Thanksgiving. In this month of in-betweens, there is a sense of duality between light and dark, warm and cold, contracting and expanding. And so, if you’re feeling a desire to do more and get things done all the while craving comfort food and Netflix, it’s little wonder. What is happening in nature is exactly what’s reflected within each of us. And so rather than fight it, it’s best to go with the flow. Boot and sandals, light jackets and woolly mitts keep each other company in our closets – you just can’t be sure! We take it all as it comes. - and getting outdoors is a wonderful way to experience it! Did you know? When you look at something green against a blue backdrop, things look more spacious. In the summer, the green trees and the clear blue sky create an airy, expansive feeling. All that changes as things turn from green to gold, orange and red in the Fall. Instead of looking through the green to the blue, our eyes stop at the fullness of the warm colours. It’s contracting in nature; it keeps us closer to the earth. When we get outside to witness these changes, we align and become part of it. It’s easier for us to flow with nature than against it! As you walk your favourite sidewalks and trails, you witness the colour creeping from one leaf to the next in stages and feel the natural shift from expansion to contraction and begin to follow suit. I’ve talked about my passion for Neighbourhood Adventuring for the past few months, but it’s particularly helpful (and fun!) at this time of year!

Springbank Dam and look upriver, you almost forget you’re in the city – the mirror image of the trees in the water doubling the magical effect. October is a month of doing, preparing and readying ourselves for the season ahead. It can feel exciting and overwhelming all at the same time. But in any season of transition, like October, it’s usually just best to take our cue from nature and go with the flow. Get out in your neighbourhood and see what inspires you!
