A Fall Bird Walk at the Coves with Nature London by Stacey Jaczko A group of Nature London members met for a walk in The Coves on September 5. This is one of many hikes led by Nature London members throughout the year in Parks and Environmentally Sensitive Areas in and around the City of London. It was a beautiful September morning as we walked the trail along the East Pond observing turtles basking in the sun and Great Blue Herons on the logs across the pond. Bird song was quiet until we got to a huge Hackberry tree located off Brookdale Ave. The tree was loaded with fruit, and birds seen or heard enjoying the feast, included Northern Cardinals, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, House Finches and Gray Catbirds. While we were observing the tree located on private property, the

owner came out and we had a great discussion with him about the tree and wildlife he had seen in the area. He gave us a little bit of a history lesson on the Coves and his property, then brought out a picture which showed the entire area we were standing on underwater during the 1937 flood. It was a different but very entertaining and informative addition to a nature walk. As we continued on our walk, we observed Great Egrets, a Belted Kingfisher and an Osprey flying with a fish in its beak. A total of 15 bird species were seen or heard. We also spent time observing the insect and plant life. The goldenrod and sunflowers in full bloom were lovely. A Hickory Tussock caterpillar was seen and we learned it is actually venomous and should not be touched. The Coves is a wonderful and easily accessible area that is rewarding to visit any time of the year. It is a great spot to get out and enjoy the amazing nature that exists in the middle of our city. The History of Halloween in the Village by Laurie Tome, HitV Event Coordinator Our story begins with two friends, a shared love of Halloween, and a simple idea; wouldn’t it be fun to have a Halloween parade on Wortley Road? As a Scenic Artist, my background in theatre flowed naturally into my love of creating costumes, decorating, and celebrating Halloween with friends and family. Friend and co-founder Maria Calleja’s passion for the arts has always been a huge part of her life. As owner of Budding Artists, Maria is known for her amazing art workshops for kids. The idea for Halloween in the Village came to us in the summer of 2011 after being inspired by a Halloween parade in New York City featuring large skeleton puppets. We thought it would be amazing to bring something like that to Wortley Village. That’s where Old South Community Organization (OSCO) came in. Our friends at OSCO have been there for us ever since. With support from Landon Library, we started community workshops to build decorations for the parade. Our first haunted house was at Landon. We approached friends and posted on Facebook asking for volunteers. One of the first people to step up was Wendy Lanctot. Her skills and dedication have made her a pillar of HitV. Wendy’s idea of a pumpkin festival became our closing ceremony, the “Lighting of the Pumpkins”. Lisa Porter, another incredible volunteer, has made the haunted house a beloved part of the event. From there, we continued to build adding costume and float competitions, the Witches of Wortley Dance Troupe and activities for all ages. Of course, countless more volunteers play vital roles in the success of the carnival. Without their dedication, this event would not be what it is today.

To advertise here, please contact Cathy@villagerpublications.com Maria and Wendy Enter Ian Leishman. Ian and I met at an OSCO meeting where he offered to build our website, secure more sponsors, and help with some of the programming. Thanks to him, our title sponsor Start.ca and all of our very important local businesses, HitV has grown into a full-scale carnival event with live music, craft vendors, food trucks, a village scavenger hunt, haunted house, a dance, pumpkin carving, and more. And we continue to add something new every year. With the success of HitV, we’re now able to fundraise for the Children’s Health Foundation. Even though Start.ca/Halloween in the Village has grown, we are committed to our community roots. We remain a free, Laurie as a Colonial Witch

family-friendly event that promotes creativity and brings safe Halloween fun to Old South London and beyond. Join us Saturday, October 26th, from 1 pm to 7 pm at the Wortley YMCA grounds. And so goes the jazz standard, celebrating the season of pumpkin spice, sweaters and falling leaves. But there must be something more, and with Thanksgiving on the way, that something is ‘gratitude’. I talked with some folks in the village to find out what they are grateful for. Rima Sater (Library Assistant and Artist) “I am thankful for the creative community which I have been a part of for the last 15 years. It has given me an outlet during good times and bad times.”

J. Bruce Parker asks: “Old Father Time checked, so there’d be no doubt Called on the north wind to come on out Then cupped his hands so proudly to shout La-di-da, di-da-di-dum, ‘tis Autumn”

Brianna Lidster Wortley Business Owner “We are so thankful for all of the continued support from the village. We are also extremely thankful to be part of such a cute neighbourhood with great neighbours and fellow business owners.”

Rob Campbell Musician

Michael Paris Auto Repair Shop Service Manager “I’ve been married for 27 years with two daughters in university, so that is what I am most thankful for – my family.”

Michael Prentice Library Page “I am grateful for ‘Sidetracks’.”

“I am thankful for the way my parents raised me and that they are still here. They gave me a certain skill set of stuff, including music. I am also grateful for that interaction that I have here with people who stop to listen to my music.”

Dave Semple Guitar Luthier, Actor, Retired DramaTeacher

Colton Somerville Old South Resident

Anna Wilson Marketing Director and Artist “I am so grateful to be part of a community that is so welcoming and supportive of small businesses and artisans.”

Sue Sutherland Wood Author, Retired Librarian “I’ve lived in Wortley Village for over three decades now. The genuine sense of community is something that I am thankful for. Walking and shopping in the village provides an old- world charm experience and passer-byes usually make eye contact and smile.”

“I am thankful for my faith. I was struck by a car over nine years ago and continue to recover so I am thankful for my therapists, my amazing family and my faith.”

“I am grateful that I am able to express my gratitude in my retirement. I feel that I spent a lot of my life not appreciating the things that I had, and once I got to retirement, I decided that I wanted to make the rest of my life about giving back.”

Meet your Old South Neighbour: Krista Smith Krista Smith’s journey with hospice and palliative care started years ago when at age twelve she volunteered as a candy striper. “I assisted patients with ice water and meals and read to or talked with them,” she recalls. “Even then I was saddened that family mem- bers were not more available to visit loved ones in their final weeks.” Krista continued to volunteer in Long Term Care homes over the years, in an effort to fill the gaps she saw in patient care. Noting that more patients would have fewer visitors, and would be alone and perhaps scared, she resolved to do what she could to ensure that others did not die alone. Now 47 and working as a volunteer at a hospice, her “passion for palliative patients on fire” Krista recently received her End of Life Doula certification, Medically Assisted In Dying (MAid) certification and a Sacred Plant Therapy certification. She is also a certified Reiki practitioner and works with Essential Oils. “I was scared of death when I was younger,” reflects Krista. “People didn’t talk about it. I plan to host workshops, art escape after- noons, open forums and other opportunities for people to get together and have conversations – to be okay to talk about death, ask questions, be confident and not fearful. I want to help families in grief, sit with them and use my knowledge and experience to be a resource for all the things they would like to know. Birthing Doulas are for helping bring life into the world. The same can be said for leaving this world. That is what an End of Life Doula does and is.” “I love Wortley Village, she continues. “We raised our children here and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. My neighbours know me, and I know them.”

Many animal rescue groups struggle through ‘Kitten Season’ and Animalert is no different. At this time of year, there are many kittens looking to adopt a family. Pictured here we have Holly and Dexter now in foster care. Most people are initially drawn to a kitten’s ‘cuteness’ but our volunteers always take care to remind adopters each kitten is probably a 15 to 20 year commitment. Donald D’Haene interprets Erik by J. Bruce Parker

Old South author Donald D’Haene brought a celebration of life event to Manor Park Memorial Hall on September 14. The sold- out performance titled Interpreting Erik , was part memorial and part theatrical event, focusing on the life and death of his brother Erik D’Haene. Erik died in 2020 at the age of 54 on the streets of Vancouver, succumbing to an overdose of methamphetamine. He had a lifelong struggle with his mental health, compounded by being homeless for over 40 years. Erik wrote in despair, “I need an interpreter in my own skin. Friend, help me to find and keep a place here”. This is exactly what brother Donald has done. The spoken word event defined the life of Erik through his art, letters and the words of his surviving siblings; Donald, Ronny, and Marina. The voice of Erik was interpreted by actor Tyler Lionel Parr. The D’Haene children were victims of sexual abuse by their father for over 10 years. Each took their own path in resolving the effects of that abuse. This production was created, directed and produced by Donald D’Haene from over 900 letters and poems. Erik’s artwork of over 200 pieces was on display. This dynamic and heartfelt event was filmed and will be released as a documentary in the near future.

Smoke Detectors Save Lives! by Geoff Rae Fire Prevention Week, running from October 6th to 12th, is an essential time to raise awareness about home fire safety. This year’s theme, ‘Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™’, focuses on the importance of having functional smoke alarms in every home. The campaign emphasizes three crucial actions: INSTALL, TEST, and REPLACE. Understanding the importance of these steps can make all the difference in a fire emergency. Smoke alarms are a critical first line of defence against home fires. Today’s homes burn faster than ever, giving you as little as two minutes — or even less — to safely escape once a fire starts. This narrow window of time makes it vital that your smoke alarms are in optimal working condition and strategically placed. Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, outside of sleeping areas (such as hallways), and on every level of your home, including the basement. When choosing a smoke alarm, make sure it is listed with Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC), which ensures it meets the necessary safety standards. For enhanced protection, consider using combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home. These alarms can be installed by a qualified electrician so that when one alarm sounds, all alarms in the home are triggered. This feature ensures that you will hear the alarm no matter where the fire starts. Regular testing of your smoke alarms is just as important as installing them. Testing ensures that the alarms are functioning correctly and that their batteries are still good. It’s recommended to test your alarms once a month by pressing the test button. If

your alarms are battery-operated, replace the batteries every six months when the time changes or whenever the low-battery warning sounds. Additionally, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years, even if they still appear to be working. Whether at home, at the cottage, or in a trailer, fire prevention is something everyone should prioritize. A well-thought-out escape plan is crucial for ensuring your family’s safety. Ensure that every household member knows the plan and practices it regularly. Remember, children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out in case of a fire. Assign someone to help them in your plan. By following these guidelines and staying informed about the latest fire prevention best practices, you can ensure that your smoke alarms will genuinely work for you in an emergency. Don’t wait until it’s too late — take action now to protect your home and loved ones.

Matt’s Car Care Tip

Wow, what a hot sticky and sunny summer we had! I for one, am glad that September is nally upon us along with the cool weather it brings. Hopefully, we can begin to resume our normal activities and get a sense of the “new normal”. Since COVID-19 changed most of our travel plans this year, many of us have been taking lots of daytrips in our cars and racking up the mileage. Perhaps your vehicle is due for its next scheduled maintenance interval? Your neighbours at Wortley Auto Service can help you with that! Most new cars are good at telling us that they need to be serviced, but, that does not always mean a simple oil change. Often, an oil change is accompanied with a tire rotation, Air and Cabin Filter replacement, uid top up and assessment of the overall condition of the car. At Wortley Auto Service, we perform a digital multi point inspection and send it right to your phone or computer! You can review the ndings, look at pictures of your car and have peace of mind knowing that your vehicle has been thoroughly inspected. Most new cars are good at telling us when they need an oil change on the information display; if you aren’t sure about the oil change intervals on your car, drop us a line or stop into our shop and we can check the intervals that apply to your vehicle. Heading into the fall driving season warrants a bit more service than a basic oil change, your crew at Wortley Auto Service will do a comprehensive inspection of your car while it is in for an oil change. The fall is a great time to check the condition of your tires. Rotating tires is the best way to ensure you have good service life out of them. Perhaps you use snow tires on your car, this is the time of year to set an appointment to install them. The cool mornings in the fall are hard on your Battery and may lead to starting problems, we always recommend testing your battery health at this time of year. In addition to our Digital Inspection, we consult the Factory Service Schedule speciic to your vehicle and make sure that we cover all the recommended service items in that table including coolant, transmission, brake uid and power steering uid service intervals. Very often, these service items can become overlooked when you are getting a “rapid” oil change performed. If you are not sure about the speciic time or mileage intervals that apply to your vehicle, feel free to drop in and chat with one of our team members or drop us a line. Wiper blades are often an overlooked maintenance item, they begin to streak and chatter in the cold weather leading to reduced visibility. Wortley Auto Service checks all wiper blades at every service appointment. Winter proof windshield washer fluid with a low freeze point like -40 degrees is important to clear frost off your windshield in the fall. We always top up your washer fluid at every service appointment as well. Book your fall maintenance appointment today and beat the rush! We look forward to serving you soon. FALL MAINTENANCE The trees are starting to change colours, the Western Fair is over and most of us are settling back into our fall routines. Perhaps you are taking the family to hockey practices or for a country drive to enjoy the fall colours, at any rate, if you are driving your trusted vehicle this fall it may be time for some maintenance.

“Matt and his team are friendly, professional, ef fi cient and honest. I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my vehicles.” DM
