LOCAL ARTIST PROFILE
Mary Louise White by Peri Hayes Proudly named after her great-grandmother, Mary White describes her lifelong artistic journey: “Drawing, painting and creating materials were always magically available. I felt steeped in an environment where beauty was a sacred element of everyday life, whether it was created by the natural world or by human effort.” Mary Louise won an art competition in elementary school for her oil painting of a robin, to which she emphasizes, “The journey from then to now has been filled with many and varied learning opportunities, which help me better respond to life through the arts.” While discussing her early influences, Mary Louise thoughtfully shares, “I feel as though I have been nurtured through art for my whole life. Her work surrounded us in our home.” Mary Louise’s grandmother was a seamstress, while her great-grandmother created curtains, tablecloths and more. Regarding Mary Louise’s father, “He would, if driving at the time, pull over to the side of the road to watch the setting sun. He had the soul of a poet.” Inspired by the beauty which surrounds her, Mary Louise offers, “Art, the intentional making of art, is uniquely human. Currently, Mary Louise works with hand-made papers, natural dyes, oil paint, watercolour, drawing media, fine yarns and glass: “My style is determined by the intent and the story before me. Inspiration is drawn from all of life. I am interested
