in relationships: those we have with ourselves, with one another, with the natural world. There is now a need, I feel, to also examine our relationship to devices, robotics, products and consumerism, institutions and increasingly to the blurring of actual reality and virtual reality.” Through fibre and glass, Mary Louise explores the dualities between light and shadow, absence and presence. Grateful for the visible presence of art in St. Thomas, Mary Louise strives to promote awareness of the role of art in the community. She concludes, “Art will make your life better. It provides an opportunity to view the world through the eyes of another. I would like readers to look deeply into works of art created in our community: to learn, for example, how Candy McManniman captures the exquisite beauty and fragility of
our quickly disappearing biodiversity, and how Denise Antaya captures — with brilliant realism — common outdoor scenes that suggest our dependence on natural light.” The Gardiner Museum in Toronto, as well as ‘gathered’ in Sparta display Mary Louise’s purchasable works.
