Frome, located in Southwold Township, was first settled by Daniel Silcox in 1816. Silcox was a native of Frome, Somerset, England.
Eden, located in the west end of Elgin County in Bayham Township, was named in 1854 when a post office was established there.
Fingal, the municipal seat of Southwold Township was established in the late 1810s. It was named after the plains of Fingal, which were located north of Dublin, Ireland.
Dutton was named after an employee of the Canada Southern Railway, which arrived in 1872. It was originally known as Bennetville and later Lisgar.
