To RSVP, please email me at crahman@london.ca I am looking forward to seeing everyone! Kind regards, Corrine

Hello Neighbours, Happy Fall to everyone! As the students return to schools in the

ward and across the City, we must take additional time on our commutes to keep everyone safe. With the increased volume of walkers, cyclists and cars, I receive many calls for traffic calming, enforcement and other measures to alleviate the bottlenecks. If you are interested in learning about these options for your neighbourhood, please reach out at crahman@london.ca. The first step is to collect ten unique household signatures from neighbours on the street. Once the signatures are collected, a traffic calming assessment can be requested. Construction is still underway at Fanshawe Park Rd. and Richmond St. wrapping up later this Fall. Local road improvements are happening on Windermere Rd. and traffic signalization improvements are complete on Gainsborough Rd. There is much more to do, including widening on Sunningdale Rd. I’ll be hosting a Ward meeting to discuss these topics and more on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at St Andre Bessette

Let’s go on an Oceania Cruise!

Hello Oakridge area – Welcome to my new monthly travel column! As a past Oakridge resident (28 yrs) and currently living in London, I’m excited to bring to you my favourite travel partners. Let’s Talk about one of my favourite Cruise Lines – Oceania Cruises

Picturesque, in a word, describes entering the World of Oceania. Eight small, luxurious ships, maximum of 1250 guests per ship, with itineraries ranging from 7 to 200 days, covering 7 continents and over 100 countries, in other words, stopping at half the countries in the world. The experiences on Oceania both on ship and off are virtually limitless, Oceania is truly the Pearl in the Oyster! Oceania Cruises prides itself in being the world’s leading culinary and destination-focused cruise line. A tag line of Relaxed Yet Refined , applies to dining aboard its eight luxurious ships. The ships offer gourmet specialty restaurants which are smaller and intimate, as well as the classic dining room. Whether a table with a white linen tablecloth or a pizza in the cafe, the simplicity of offering the perfect combination is of prime importance. The menus are created by one of the most innovative culinary teams, designed by Jacques Pepin and his chefs, in combination with board member Giada de Laurentiis. With over half the crew of an Oceania Ship dedicated to the preparation or serving of cuisine, you can understand why they boast the reputation of “The Finest Cuisine at Sea”. Oceania offers a complement of amenities to enhance the experience. Inclusions such as unlimited WiFi; laundry service; soda, specialty coffee and tea; gourmet ice cream and, beginning January of 2025, shipboard gratuities are included. I invite you to contact me and chat about how the Magic of an Oceania Experience can entice you to the sea! Barbara

Join us Mary Dundas and Julie Whitehead tried hockey for the first time when they were 29 years old, and both were hooked. Nancy learned when she was young, stopped in her late teens, and picked up the stick once again later in life. Now all three local residents play in various leagues – Huff and Puff, London’s 40+ Women’s League and in other pick up games across the city. “It was such a thrill to play at Nationals and win gold. I’ll never forget it. Bonding with such a great bunch of gals was amazing,” said Mary Dundas. The next games take place in 2026 in Winnipeg. The Golden Girls of London will be back at it to defend their title. Golden Girls: LONDON’S 60+ Women’s Team wins National Ice Hockey Championship On August 29, 2024, London’s Women’s 60+ hockey team became the National Champions at the Canada +55 Games. The games, took place this year in Quebec City and featured over 3000 athletes from across Canada who competed in over 20 events. The London Team reached the gold medal match without having surrendered a goal, besting teams from British Columbia, Alberta, and the East Coast. ie The gold medal game was won in a 1-0 shoot out. Nancy Hurgett, fired home the winner. Before each game, the London Team was greeted with cheers from the family and friends who had travelled the 10 hours to Quebec City. Julie Whitehead’s sisters, Linda and Susan, led the fans with the trumpet sounds of ‘Hockey Night in Canada’. Team Chaos, is made up of women from the London area, all 60 years of age or more who share a passion for playing hockey at any age.

Plant Wisdom Hike at the Museum of Ontario Archaeology by Leeanne Doxtator, Museum of Ontario Archaeology In late August, an eager group of people attended a Plant Wisdom hike led by Brenda Gallagher, Forestry Technician and Vegetation Specialist with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, at the Museum of Ontario Archaeology (MOA). As the MOA enhances access to London’s cultural and natural heritage, the hike concentrated on exploring the medicinal, edible, and utilitarian properties of local plant species. Brenda explained which berries and nuts could be used to enhance summer meals and how to treat colds, coughs, headaches, bee stings, and boo boos using local plants. Shared were some simple herbal remedies easily made at home. Rich

in history, Brenda also described how these plants played a role in tanning hides, as a source of syrup, rubber and fibre, and as filling for life jackets during the Second World War. The group enjoyed hearing about their folklore, Indigenous legends, such as how white pine became the “Tree of Peace”, and other healing lessons plants offer us. To stay informed about the MOA’s upcoming Fall and Winter programs, please visit our website at archaeologymuseum.ca.

Spoke & Sproket Haunted Ride for MS

Get ready for a haunted outdoor adventure! On Saturday, October 26th, Spoke & Sprocket staff and volunteers will transform a local path into a spooktacular haunted hallowe’en experience – on wheels! Expect zombie cyclists, witches, ghosts, and harmless frights along the way. Hallowe’en has always been a favourite holiday of Mike and Jenn, owners of the popular bicycle repair shop located at 1890 Hyde Park Road. Mike’s Aunt Shirley had suffered terribly and passed away from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and so the couple looked for ways to fundraise for research to fight the disease. Cyclists (all welcome!) will meet at Woodcock Street, just west of Mallard, for a safety check (helmets mandatory!), make a goodwill donation towards MS, and then enjoy a short ‘spooktacular’ ride along Pumpkinseed Pond to North Routledge at Blue Heron.

Jenn and Mike of Spoke & Sprocket with ‘Bruce’, their year-round guest!

down on the side of the road is not only frustrating but also puts your safety at risk! Upon request, we can check your brakes, battery, suspension, engine oil, fluid levels, tire pressures, tire life, lights, cabin filters, air filters, belts, and windshield wipers. These are all crucial components in safe winter driving. Winter tires are crucial for safety and performance during cold, icy, and snowy conditions. Look for the peaked mountain with a snowflake symbol when shopping for winter tires. Tires marked with this symbol meet specific snow traction performance requirements and have been designed specifically for use in severe snow conditions. At temperatures below 7°C, all-season and summer tires begin to lose elasticity, leading to less traction. Winter tires keep their elasticity and grip at much lower temperatures. Investing in winter tires is an investment in safety. They can make the difference between a safe winter journey and a potentially dangerous one. While they may seem like an additional expense, the peace of mind and improved control they offer on winter roads are priceless, making winter tires an essential purchase for anyone facing cold and snowy conditions. Hyde Park BIA Launches ‘Barrels For Bees’ with Support from TD Bank’s Friends of the Environment Fund by Ellen McGran, Hyde Park Business Improvement Association This year, the Hyde Park Business Improvement Association (HPBIA), in partnership with the City of London, received a grant from TD Bank’s Friends of the Environment Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to protecting the environment and greening communities across Canada. With this grant, we are excited to introduce a new initiative called ‘Barrels For Bees’. Over the coming weeks and months, six pollinator barrels will be placed along Gainsborough Road, each beautifully painted by a community partner. The Pollinator Barrels Program is designed to create vibrant habitats for pollinators while also enhancing the visual appeal of our outdoor spaces. By focusing on bee-friendly container gardens, this program aims to educate and empower the community to actively contribute to the health of our local ecosystems. Our goal is to harness community involvement, educational outreach, and strategic partnerships to support pollinator habitats and enrich the Greater Hyde Park Area. Many thanks to our partners at Fox Hollow Retirement, Northwest London Resource Centre, Oxford Learning Hyde Park, Let’s Talk Science, Jess Jones Rec Therapy and Core Tutoring for painting the barrels. Learn more at HydeParkBIA.ca and follow the HPBIA on Facebook.

DarLena’s Re-Store Latest Restoration

From our Inbox

“Thank you for the copies of the September Villager magazines. My fav are the articles that bring back memories. In the Hyde Park / Oakridge issue you have a picture of the London Hunt Club on the bridge. I hunted for 15 yrs …. 14 years on the same horse, never missing a Thanksgiving or Labour Day hunt. The photo is of a Thanksgiving hunt starting at the Hunt Club. I would have been there! That horse is buried in my backyard. Also the Hyde Park bridge, in the 60s I would lie in bed on Kings Park Circle that backs up on the Hunt Club and hear every car that crossed that bridge before the renovation. All the loose boards would rattle. LOL. Great memories.Thanks. Steve.” (Steve Plunkett)

Smoke Detectors Save Lives! by Geoff Rae Fire Prevention Week, running from October 6th to 12th, is an essential time to raise awareness about home fire safety. This year’s theme, ‘Smoke alarms: Make them work for you! ™’, focuses on the importance of having functional smoke alarms in every home. The campaign emphasizes three crucial actions: INSTALL, TEST, and REPLACE. Understanding the importance of these steps can make all the difference in a fire emergency. Smoke alarms are a critical first line of defence against home fires. Today’s homes burn faster than ever, giving you as little as two minutes — or even less — to safely escape once a fire starts. This narrow window of time makes it vital that your smoke alarms are in optimal working condition and strategically placed. Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, outside of sleeping areas (such as hallways), and on every level of your home, including the basement. When choosing a smoke alarm, make sure it is listed with Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC), which ensures it meets the necessary safety standards. For enhanced protection, consider using combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home. These alarms can be installed by a qualified electrician so that when one alarm sounds, all alarms in the home are triggered. This feature ensures that you will hear the alarm no matter where the fire starts. Regular testing of your smoke alarms is just as important as installing them. Testing ensures that the alarms are functioning correctly and that their batteries are still good. It’s recommended

to test your alarms once a month by pressing the test button. If your alarms are battery-operated, replace the batteries every six months when the time changes or whenever the low-battery warning sounds. Additionally, smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years, even if they still appear to be working. Whether at home, at the cottage, or in a trailer, fire prevention is something everyone should prioritize. A well-thought-out escape plan is crucial for ensuring your family’s safety. Ensure that every household member knows the plan and practices it regularly. Remember, children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out in case of a fire. Assign someone to help them in your plan. By following these guidelines and staying informed about the latest fire prevention best practices, you can ensure that your smoke alarms will genuinely work for you in an emergency. Don’t wait until it’s too late — take action now to protect your home and loved ones.
