Plant Wisdom Hike at the Museum of Ontario Archaeology by Leeanne Doxtator, Museum of Ontario Archaeology In late August, an eager group of people attended a Plant Wisdom hike led by Brenda Gallagher, Forestry Technician and Vegetation Specialist with the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority, at the Museum of Ontario Archaeology (MOA). As the MOA enhances access to London’s cultural and natural heritage, the hike concentrated on exploring the medicinal, edible, and utilitarian properties of local plant species. Brenda explained which berries and nuts could be used to enhance summer meals and how to treat colds, coughs, headaches, bee stings, and boo boos using local plants. Shared were some simple herbal remedies easily made at home. Rich

in history, Brenda also described how these plants played a role in tanning hides, as a source of syrup, rubber and fibre, and as filling for life jackets during the Second World War. The group enjoyed hearing about their folklore, Indigenous legends, such as how white pine became the “Tree of Peace”, and other healing lessons plants offer us.
