WHY THE UNIVERSITY OF LAW

STANDING OUT FROMTHE CROWD What really sets us apart from other universities is the guiding principle that the current and future lawyers we teach should only ever learn in a realistic, professional and contemporary context. Our track record of excellence in learning and development has helped us establish worldwide connections with the legal services market. This is why many leading global law firms work exclusively with us to develop their people, and why legal employers of all types want to meet our students. It’s also why law schools and professional bodies around the world choose to enter into strategic alliances with us. FOCUSED ON EMPLOYABILITY We focus exclusively on practice-based training and give students access to our market leading law careers service and legal vacancy database as soon as they accept a place with us. Students also benefit from our pioneering and award- winning pro bono programmes, which allow them to gain valuable work experience by helping real clients from the local community. This combination means our graduates are in a unique position when it comes to finding employment.

OUR ORIGINS TRACE BACK TO 1876 WITH THE FORMATION OF LEADING TUTORIAL FIRM GIBSON & WELDON AND LATER ON, WITH THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE LAW SOCIETY SCHOOL OF LAW . IN 1962 THE TWO WERE AMALGAMATED TO ESTABLISH THE COLLEGE OF LAW . In 2006 we made history by becoming the first-ever independent institution to gain the power to award degrees. And in 2012 we became the first private institution to be given university status, and became The University of Law . We are the UK’s longest-established specialist provider of legal education. In fact, we’ve trained more lawyers than anyone else across our eight centres in the UK. With a rich heritage and a reputation for innovation and contemporary teaching practices, we continuously focus on training and developing the best legal minds.

INNOVATIVE LEARNING FROM THE BEST

WE SPECIALISE IN TEACHING, NOT RESEARCH. WE FOCUS OUR ENERGY ON DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE AND HIGHLY EFFECTIVE TEACHING METHODS, ALL ENDORSED BY EMPLOYERS. Study with us and you’ll benefit from a proven and successful teaching methodology. Our teaching is delivered by professionally qualified tutors and focuses on the knowledge and practical skills needed to be successful. These skills include problem solving, oral and written communication, team work and ethical conduct. We keep our teaching interesting, and our students regularly give feedback on the excellent quality and style. You can expect a combination of workshops and lectures, with materials including case studies which you’ll explore in small groups. Because we work closely with employers, we ensure that it’s all presented in a commercial context where you’re taught to deliver client-focused advice. You’ll be given the opportunity to practise these skills in real-life scenarios and you’ll receive regular constructive feedback.

Our 250+ team of tutors, visiting professors and visiting lecturers are qualified solicitors, barristers or judges with extensive practical experience – and, most importantly, share a passion both for law and teaching. Many still practise, which means you’ll learn from their insight into today’s legal world. Each student has a personal tutor providing one-to-one ongoing support, as well as advice on starting working life, whether in law or another discipline. As resident tutors are based in our centres, they operate an open door policy, so you can talk to them whenever you need.
