WORK OF THE BIBLE WOMEN

Mrs. T. C. Horton, Supt.

A POOR, uneducated woman was really saved as the result of house-to-house visitation. She came into a neighborhood Bible class and the Word seemed to open up to her in a very wonderful way. Her husband and daughter were saved, then a burden was laid on her for three old men in her neighborhood, unsaved, and seem ingly almost past reaching. One day she found it necessary to spend a couple of hours in the home where one of the old men lived, and she sat there reading her Bible—he reading his newspaper. She felt she must speak to' him, but .didn’t know how to begin, and kept saying to herself, “How shall I begin?” Finàlly the break was made. The old man was loud and full of argument. She said, “I don’t know how to meet »your arguments, but* I can tell you just what thè Bible says.” So with skill that can only be given by the Holy Spirit, she met all his criticisms and doubts with the Word. She said after wards, with wonder in her face, “I didn’t think I ‘could ever do it, but some way the right verse always came to me.” We said to her, “That is what we call ‘personal work.’ Do you think he was saved?” She replied, “I don’t know, but he finally said to me, ‘I know I am a wicked old man, unsaved, but I would like to be saved ;’ and then I-told him how he could be saved. He said during the conversation, ‘If you are, all right, I do not see why you need to bother yourself about me.’ I told him that i-f we should meet up there and he should say to me, fj You knew this and never told me,’ how do you suppose I would feel? Why,- when you were away the last time I

could hardly wait for you to get back, for fear you might die and never know about this.” In a woman’s Bible class in a little suburban town, where a struggling little church was located, almost 5 unable to pay rent, a backslider was restored to thé Lord, then, fully surrendered to Him. Then the husbànd was interested through the wife, the little church was presented with a lot for a building, rent free until the building can .be erected, and help is- being given in putting up the building. Surely this Bible class has paid in a material as well as in a spiritual way. So many had seemed uninterested, so many away from home, that it appeared almost useless to go on. Then our Lord, who is so gracious, opened a door. A young woman just starting in her own home, invited the Bible woman to come in, told her she had been accustomed to attend church and Sunday School, but as she got older had gone her own way. She listened to the story she knew so well, took a marked Gospel of John, which she promised to read, paying special attention to the underscored words. The Bible Woman left, glad and encouraged that God had led her to one soul interested enough to listen to the message. At the very next house a bright-faced young woman answered, “No, I dp not know the way to find Him, but I want to.” How quickly and gladly the Bible Woman pointed out the way' as. we have it in the Word of God.
