Your Local Furry Friends Your Local Furry Friends would love to showcase all the lovely local pets in the area. To have your pet featured in the magazine, please send an email to tami@villagerpublications.com with a photo and a brief description of your furry family friend.

This is Ollie, a 4-year-old Beagle/Foxhound mix who loves his old Komoka green spaces. There’s so much to sniff and so many friends to meet in the park. He loves nothing better than supervising the neighbourhood from his perch high up on the deck. He has lovely tolerant neighbours who put up with his houndy woofing at everyone who walks near the house, and some of them even pass him treats through the fence. What an amazing community we have! Miss Kitty was featured as our pet of the month in the December 2023 edition. Her fur parents John and Donna have a note posted on their door that reads: “A wonderful member of our team here at Hoskin Feed – Miss Kitty – has passed away. She was over 20 years old and was a beloved part of life at the feed store. Thank you to all our customers who gave her love, care and countless treats! She was a delight, and we will all miss her.” Rest in peace, Miss Kitty. We hope you are catching lots of mice over the rainbow bridge.

For many pets, knocking and doorbells can be overwhelming. Set up a quiet space, preferably in another room in the home where your pet may freely retreat. Provide a soft bed, favourite toys or a safe chew. The addition of calming music, a white noise machine or a calming pheromone may help reduce overall anxiety 2 . For highly anxious pets, consider setting up your trick-or-treat station at the end of the driveway or boarding for the evening. Finally, update your pet’s information and secure your yard. Ensure all pet collars, along with microchip and veterinary information are up to date. Should your pet slip through the front door or from the backyard, this information will help your pet’s safe return home. With a little extra care and preparation, you can ensure that your Halloween is enjoyable and safe for both you and your pets. Happy Halloween! 1. Pet Poison Helpline (2024). Essential Tips for a Spooktacular Halloween by Chantalle Christos, MSc CAB RVT thecompanioncode@gmail.com While Halloween is an evening of fun, treats and spooktacular, it poses some risks to our companion animals. From ingesting candy to the persistent ringing of the doorbell, providing a safe environment for your pets on Halloween is key.

Keep candy, treats and baked goods out of reach. Chocolate, artificial sweeteners, and raw yeast dough can all lead to toxicity in dogs, cats and some pocket pets 1 . We all know that one dog that ate the bag with chips in it! Avoid an emergency trip to the vet this Halloween by safely storing treats out of reach. While pet costumes are adorable, they can be stress-inducing to your pet. Avoid costumes that restrict movement, obstruct vision or have strings or small parts which can be ingested. Alternatively, consider a Halloween-themed bandana, collar or bowtie!
