This week has been the last week of formal timetabled lessons for our Year 11 and Year 13 students before their written public exams begin next week. I know that they have all been working extremely hard and are ready, but want to wish them all the best of luck. Our celebrations with Year 13 will take place after the exams so today I wanted to focus the bulletin on celebrating our Year 11 students.

A long-standing Waldegrave tradition is our Dress Up Day. On Wednesday our Year 11 students outdid themselves with their creativity, collaboration and humour. Groups of friends chose a theme in secret before arriving at school for the big reveal. This year we had so many wonderful costumes including the cast of Toy Story, The Inbetweeners, Ghostbusters and Disney Princesses. Beyond the world of fiction, some of our students looked to their leaders so we had a full array of recent Cabinet Ministers and Prime Ministers. As always the effort of our students was outstanding and the energy with which they threw themselves into the task brought smiles to the faces of both the school and local community, as well as a bit of confusion no doubt. Click here to view the Dress Up Day photo gallery. Yesterday, we held our formal Year 11 Celebration Assembly and were delighted to be joined by so many family and friends to mark this milestone in our students’ education. There were many tears as we listened to our Head Girl Jiayi, tutors and other key staff sharing memories of the last 5 years. We ended with an inspirational speech from Susan O’Brien, a Waldegrave parent and VP of Brand at Just Eat, who reminded us that our success comes from a balance of hard work and self-care. Thank you to everyone who made this week one for our students to remember, including those who had a late start yesterday.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Due to popular demand we have secured an additional workshop on exam stress for parents of Waldegrave students only. With exam season imminent, students and families may be spending a lot of time managing the associated stress. To support this process, on Tuesday 16 May at 6pm the local Mental Health Support Team is hosting an online workshop for parents on exam stress. The session is designed to provide parents with psychoeducation surrounding exam anxiety and the stress the young person may be facing as they move towards their exams. Information will be shared about the foundations of anxiety; how it presents in some teenagers; how their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and physical feelings may be affected. Guidance on strategies and advice around tackling these behaviours will also be provided. If you would like to attend this workshop, please book your ticket using the link below: Exam stress online parent workshop Tuesday 16 May 6pm

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 10

It was lovely to see so many parents and carers at the Post 16 Options Evening Mr Bannister and the sixth form team hosted at the start of this week. We hope parents and students found this evening informative. If you have any questions about your child’s next steps please do not hesitate to contact the school. The slides are available on our website: Post 16 Options presentations Well done to all the GCSE drama students who took part in their Drama Component 1 Exam on Wednesday. Well done to the following tutor groups who earned the most epraise points last week: 1st 10FGD, 2nd 10PON and 3rd 10SPA with 47, 31 and 26 points respectively. As Borough Sports approaches we are aiming to encourage students to attend track club and field event practises. Students will need to attend the clubs and trials in order to be selected for the school team. We will now be playing some Rounders games against other local schools in the upcoming weeks. It is not too late for students to sign up to be a part of the team, if they are interested please remind them that they should attend the practise sessions that take place after school on Tuesdays. Looking into next week we have an exciting trip taking place overseas for our German students as they leave for Boppard next Thursday. We hope they all have a great time on this residential visit and look forward to hearing all about it when they return.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

He Said / She Said by Erin Kelly “The betrayal flayed my skin, but his cowardice chips the bone. It poisons the marrow.”

Laura thought herself the hero when she saved a young woman from a brutal attack. This would go on to change her life in ways that no one could have predicted. Now she and her boyfriend Kit live constantly in fear, tiptoeing around society, trying to remain as invisible and off the radar as possible. However Laura knows that something is hidden, she is never quite seeing the whole picture of the story. This gripping thriller leads to crazy character developments and

horrifying revelations up till the very last page. ~Recommended by Miranda H, Year 9 student
